Oh no! Temporarily deaf!

Mine was done with ear suctioning, was on NHS. Done by a nurse and an audiologist, but not at the Doctors surgery.

I had this happen. Two weeks of olive oil and then I made a Dr appointment thinking the wax would be ready for removal. It was, however Dr didn't do removal, I had to be referred to the treatment nurse which involved making a further appt for a week later. All for a two minute process.
However, at least it was successfully done and I couldn't believe the difference.
Good to know there is a DIY kit.

Our surgery won't syringe ears now either. I looked on Amazon and found a home syringing kit. It's a little syringe with an ear piece. I'd already softened the wax with oil for a few days. I sat at the sink (well bidet actually), and did it myself. After two or three squirts, success, out came the plug of wax and I could hear again. No need to visit the surgery now, I can do it myself. ?

They seem to have had a change of policy on ear syringing at our surgery. Last year DH had to practically beg them to do his as his lack of hearing was becoming intolerable. Three weeks ago they did it without query. We have recently found bicarbonate of soda drops to be more effective and quicker at softening the wax than olive oil.

They don't do syringing here at all. Dd had to get hers done privately.

It might be worth finding out if ear suctioning is available in your area. I found it quicker, easier, more comfortable and effective than syringing. You only have to use the oil for a couple of days before seeing the audiologist. The only downside was that I had to pay but I believe it is available on the NHS in some places.

It's like being under water all the time isn't it? I give it a wriggle and it sort of briefly pops back but then goes again. Sigh!
Sad thing was sitting in garden reading this afty and it's so silent. Not like the silence when the buzzard's about, you can just hear it's "mewing" but all the other birds hold their breath. It was more complete-really strange. I know there will be lots of GNs who live with permanent deafness and I don't take my hearing (or any sense come to that!) for granted but, oh boy, this is hopeless. It's going to be a long week. DD FaceTime this afty with our 3 year old DGD fresh back from hols. She kept fetching things to show me. It was a test of my acting/Granny skills to pretend I could hear her!

Just been through the same thing, Newquay. The nurse took some of the wax out last week but have to go back on Friday to have the rest removed so am going through the olive oil business again. The effect of the oil should wear off in a couple of hours. But it is a real nuisance I know!
