Americans sell fabulous cheeses. You've just got to know where to buy it. Try a good Italian deli in NY and your cup will runners over.

When I first lived in Scotland I knew what a roll was but if I ever asked for a barm cake people looked at me as if I was barmy.

I'm sure there are delis that sell good cheese in the US, ffinnochio, but your average American thinks cheese either comes out of a tube or as a flabby proceed square on top of a burger. I'm gobsmacked that The Times is giving space to this "leading doctor", whose background is apparently in psychiatry and neurology, to flog his latest book with no empirical evidence to support it. Keep on munching the good stuff, folks.

yesterday my dd turned up with a little bag (thought it was a bag of crisp) on opening it it was a little packet, complete with 2 crackers/3 pickled onions/a triangular portion of spread cheese and a little plastic spreader (used to be little wooden ones when I used to buy them in the pubs or off licenses) anyone one else remember them

We love cheese but find we go in phases with it - gave done the Brie one for a while and at the moment we are on Comté 12-16 months old! I quite often have a slice for breakfast with an apple.

I had to go and see a cardiologist and he kept saying - stop eating cheese, cheese is too salty, women love cheese and it makes them fat! I had to keep calm as he was doing an echgramme! But I did still eat it.

Roll on a few months and I was talking to my GP about foods which give me reflux and he asked if I could eat cheese - I told him I could and he said that was fine then as you need it to get enough calcium. But he does say you are better to eat it at lunchtime rather than the evening.

America knows FA about good cheese. They decided they would boycott Roquefort because France would not support the Iraq invasion.... and we all know how that panned out. Well, a clear case of cutting off one's nose to spite one's face. Having lived in France for nigh on 20 years I'm going to put my head on the block and say France and the UK produce the finest cheeses in the world .... Italy comes close, but they perhaps don't have the wide range ... but I stand corrected on that. As for the US? A non-starter. IMO, of course.

Maybe he's thinking of pizzas - they're very popular, and often have loads of greasy cheese dripping off them.

DD has been to the States quite a few times for pleasure and business and her constant complaint is the awful cheese. I gather from some of the American cookery shows that they have some good imported Italian cheeses, but the stuff they make themselves is awful.

Well that's me done for. I'd never give up cheese. I'd sooner give up chocolate.

DH came back from the deli today with some local smoked goats cheese we've not had before. It's wonderful and is really testing my No Snacking February.

It's quite funny ( in retrospect ) but every time I went to my French GP all she went on about was cutting down on cheese, lardons, charcuterie ( basically processed meat such as salami, pate, Bayonne ham). All the stuff the French live on! Never asked about my wine consumption. Thrisher ... I think Death by Baked Camembert is infinitely preferable to Death by Cocolate Cake.

I'm sure I read somewhere on Gransnet that it was a good idea to eat a cube of cheese after eating acidic food or drinks as it neutralises and protects the tooth enamel.

I just mentioned it to DH and we reminisced about his aunt who used to eat a chunk of cheese most days while she was cooking dinner.
She nearly reached her 100th birthday - if she hadn't eaten all that cheese perhaps she would have lived longer.

Neal Barnard is a Seventh Day Adventist. They follow a vegan diet as part of their religion so his comments re diet are always rather biased. In the interest of fairness I must point out that SDAs have long life expectancy but I like my cheese too much to give it up for few extra years of old age!

There has been a thread about the many different local names for bread rolls. It does seem to cause confusion.

Stilton still wins out for me.

Some of the local artisan cheese makers are now selling all sorts of interesting cheeses but it is expensive.
I had some from one of these producers who made some to a very old Staffordshire recipe it was very nice.
I always forget to go to our local farmers market on the first Saturday.
