Toothache

Blue Belle my heartfelt sympathy, that sounds truly dreadful.
I just hope it is resolved soon, TBH I can imagine little worse. An abscess in a wisdom some years ago over Christmas reduced me to washing down painkillers with brandy and when I got to the dentist on the 27th I was ready to have my head removed as well as the tooth. ???

bluebelle are you on a decent painkiller ? If not I would try to get to the GP and he can prescribe something stronger to help . Co codamol 50/500 is a good strong one and would be OK to take for a few days at a time . Paracetamol/ Ibuprofen won`t touch this level of pain as you probably know ! xx

Thanks for response charliegirl I hadn't heard of it either but it appears to not be rare and can be there without a problem unless it flares up into an infected area which obviously happened it does make more sense as I couldn't understand why the anti biotics were not working as I rarely take them and thought they would act very quickly

OMG BlueBelle it appears to be never ending but at least you are no longer crying with the pain as you were last month. I cannot say I have heard of a dental cyst before, infection from an abscess would spring to mind first. I do hope that it is sorted sooner rather than later and more importantly you do not have any problems over the BH period. Thanks for updating us.

Just a little update as since I first posted my problem is still ongoing I m not in dreadful pain anymore and the swelling has retreated but I still have low level pain and have been on three more lots of antibiotics since this problem started A few weeks ago I was once more rolling round in agony anyway I had an appointment yesterday and now have more understanding of what's going on ..... I wondered why the dentist didn't just take the tooth out well after seeing my X-rays my root does not end in a pointy bit like it should but in a round ball to remove the tooth he first has to remove a piece of bone to give it access to get out ..... secondly he now believes the lack of response to the anti biotics points to the fact it's not an infection but a dental cyst and these don't always improve if the tooth is removed so basically it's a wait and see game he says a cyst can take anything up to 12 months to go but he wants to keep me as painfree as possible during the waiting game Wish me luck x

Hope things have improved Bluebell, I had a dental abscess 8 years ago and I still remember the pain !!! I was also on two lots of antibiotic, Erythromycin and Metrodiazonle ( sp ) Plus I found alternating paracetamol/codeine with Ibroprofen at least took the edge of . It took about 48hrs before I noticed an improvement.

Thanks to everyone for your kindness and advice I am feeling a tiny bit brighter today so I m hoping I m on the mend I still look like a one sided gerbil but hopefully that will continue in the right direction I will try the thumb and V rub Suzan I have so much to do in the next week including a theatre show then a short flight so really want to feel normal again

Had this problem not long ago, antibiotics took a day or two to work but I found relief with paracetamol and codeine combined in one tablet. It gave relief for a couple of hours at a time. Can also try an ice cube covered in handkerchief or similar. Rub slowly in V between thumb and first finger of hand, same side as toothache. This did help although I never thought it would. My problem was a crown, the post has fractured under the gum, having tooth out tomorrow. Always have to have packing and stitching but don't mind that. Unfortunately I also have a meds check at the doctors two hours later, have just been reading the white coat hypertension posts. Have had this for years, at least I'll have a good excuse if BP is up a bit. Thankfully it's been really good on home monitor! Hope you are pain free very soon BlueBelle ?

Provided you are on the correct course of antibiotics they normally take around 48 hours to kick in. I do feel sorry for you, there is nothing worse. I would also give Izabella's suggestions some thought.

Thanks Isabella yes hot water bottle with cover on the large swollen jawline and the painkillers alternative now on 2 lots of antibiotics so really hoping fingers crossed and all that .....

You have my heartfelt sympathies. I have great experience of this. Have you tried applying gentle heat to the jawline? Either a wheat bag or hot water bottle at suitable temperatures. This helps believe me. Alternate paracetamol and brufen (provided you are not asthmatic or cannot take it for other reasons). Do you have a dental hospital nearby.. Ours operates an A/E department and is usually excellent. Or an NHS walk in centre? Less able to fob you off than phone calls

So sorry BlueBelle - it sounds like torture. not too hot. Hope it all sorts out soon.

Hang in there and dig deep, BlueBelle. I wish there was something we could all do to make you feel better.

Lady Gracie, kidney stones are worse, believe me. I am pleased you managed to get attended to Bluebell, and hope that you are snuggled in bed nice and warm now and dosed up on the antibiotics and pain killers. I hope you have a good sleep.

I got an emergency appointment this morning I m now on two lots of strong anti biotics and managed a three hour sleep this pm I look a bit like a gerbil that's had a stroke with a big swelling one side and my mouth kinda pulled over to accommodate the swelling, not a pretty sight

BlueBelle I do feel for you. Whinge away. I know what that's like. Some years ago I had terrible pain from a back molar and nothing seemed to control it. I had been taking analgesics and then, in desperation, I also started drinking brandy (I hate brandy). I knew that was very unwise but at that point I couldn't have cared less! It didn't help. All I ended up with was a socking hangover. I really really hope that you get an appointment today and some pain relief.

BlueBelle, how awful I've no advice, just a lot of sympathy and (((hugs))). I do hope you get sorted out this morning.

Had a terrible night cried to myself on and off all blooming night and I m not usually a wuss hot water bottles , ibrupofen and paracetamols hope they open soon and can fit me in for something ?

I know in the scale of things it's only a tooth but the pain is awful and I now am so swollen I look like I ve had a stroke as my mouth is pulled towards the swollen side I just hope I can see someone and get on some anti bionics or better still have it out although they might not want to do that until it's a bit less traumatised

I was pretty irritated inside with the poor chap on the end of the phone who probably had a tick list of question to ask I tried to be patient with him but when I got asked for the third time why do you think it's a dental problem and is there's access to your house if we need to come to you ( I don't want anyone to come to me) now is the pain in your jaw linked to any breathlessness ,..no I m not having a heart attack You say there is sweeling in your jaw is it a lump can you open your mouth , yes I haven't got tentenus I ve got a BAD TOOTH problem and after all these he ended with I ll give you a phone number.... me hooray..... to ring tomorrow we'll all that and I could have googled that bit of info myself
