It's the health authority guidelines though, pollyparrot - goodness knows how far I'd have to travel to find a GP who would prescribe Gaviscon Advance. It would probably work out cheaper to buy it myself as I do now.

It's my belief that if you suffer from regular acid reflux and it's been properly diagnosed, then whichever medication works should be prescribed. I would change doctors if they were refusing to prescribe something like Gaviscon.

It seems my local health authority won't sanction it, anno. The cheapo alternative my GP prescribed is Peptac Liquid, which I don't find effective, and the dosage is much higher.

I do get Gaviscon Advance on prescription and can't see why your GP thinks it's too expensive. I also get a supply of Gaviscon Advance tablets because if I go away for a weekend, I can't carry a heavy bottle of the suspension in my luggage!

I do find Gaviscon Advance helps, taken at bedtime, but my GP won't prescribe it as it's 'too expensive'.

From what I've read about Nexium it seems it is Esomeprazol, which is another ppi. I might try it after my endoscopy, depending on what the results are.

I am new to Gnet, thought it may have been a way to have pleasant, fun conversations with similarly minded. Sadly it seems to have the usual bully waiting to pounce on what was my first post - quite genuine as it happens - but instantly disapproved of. I don't need that sort of abuse, does anyone?

You can get Omeprazole and Gaviscon on prescription. I've not had any success at all with Gaviscon. I have Nexium on prescription, which works for me.

It's Gaviscon Advance that's recommended for silent reflux - it forms a barrier on top of the stomach contents. I wasn't aware that there were any 'own brands' available.

I suffer from acid reflux and take one omnoprazole a day. I don't buy gaviscon, too expensive. I buy Boots own or Waitrose own. Same ingredients, same size but a couple of pounds cheaper and it does the trick.My iindigestion is always at its worst if I have to take steroids for my asthma/copd, but thats another story

I've tried just about everything over the years, Gaviscon has been the best until a few months ago when I discovered NEXIUM. Available over the counter and I think they're a bit expensive at roughly £1 per tablet but I find I don't need one every day so it's well worth it. Prevents the indigestion before it starts. ?

Maybe it's also genetic - my Dad smoked, drank, ate loads of fried food and never had indigestion. (Which he cooked himself - Mum refused.)

I have a strange thing that if I cook a casserole using only normal things I can eat OK but do it in a slow cooker I am bad with reflux!! Cannot work that out at all.

I see that somebody is saying about Magnesium - a bath with Magnesium flakes soaks into the skin and, apart from other benefits, makes you have a very good nights sleep. It is good for people with thyroid problems.

And if you'd read the whole thread, you'd see that tests for h-pylori have been mentioned several times already.
