Madmeg My parents were the same, I think it was their generation. The only compliment I ever knew they paid me, was the result of one of their friends repeating it to me.

At my father's funeral, he outlived my mother, all their friends told us how proud our parents were of their daughters and their grandchildren's achievements. We just wished they could have told us.

Oh, but I should have added well done to all the kids who have tried their best. It is all they can do and I wouldn't ask any more. My GD has learning difficulties but she attacks everything with gusto and oozes confidence. I know she will have a successful career in something she loves.

Many, many years ago when I did my Maths O-level a year early I was told I had scored 98%. When I told my lovely dad he said "What happened to the other two percent?"!!!

I left school at 16 and after three boring office jobs I eventually qualified at nearly 30, and in my own time, as an Accountant. My dad said nothing. At his funeral many years later a couple of his old workmate attended and told me that on the day I qualified he took them all to the pub for a drink and told them he was "swollen with pride". But not a dicky bird to me! I loved him even more!

Your mention of Glandular Fever MOnica reminds me of the time I took my 18 year old son to the doctor because he was sleeping so much. The doctor assured me that all teenage boys sleep a lot. I said that he was literally sleeping all day and I was wondering if it was Glandular Fever. The doctor started to look in his mouth saying "You see if it was Glandular Fever there would have been a recognisable rash in his mouth" Short pause and then "OK it's Glandular Fever"

I’ve never heard of disautonomia mOnica but it sounds like a tough thing for a 16 year old to cope with. How is it managed, and is there any treatment? I wish him well for his further education.

Thank you.disautonomia is a condtion that effects the operation of the autonomic systems of the body like breathing, blood circulation, digestion etc. DGS was diagnosed with itwhen he was about 13 and going through the rapid growth stage boys go through.

It is something that some children develop with puberty and then grow out of, and we are crossing our fingers and hoping that is what will happen.

It is a strange condition, one weekend he will be out on a 20 mile hike with the scouts and be as right as rain and the next weekend, go into town to do some shopping and return home whey faced and exhausted and then sleep for 5 hours.

Adding glandular fever to that as he starts A level studies is the last thing he needs.

DGS suffers from disautonomia, which can disrupt his heart, cause fainting and also cause days when, for no reason, he is so tired he cannot get out of bed and will sleep for 5 hours or more during the day.

He has done well in his GCSEs, plenty of 9s, but he has just been diagnosed with glandular fever and is worrying about how he is going to cope with the exhaustion that illness causes, on top of his existing problems, while starting his A level studies.

I was delighted for my severely dyslexic GS who passed all of his GCSE’s. He worked so hard to achieve this and I’m so proud of him.

One of my grandchildren suffered terrible anxiety over her mocks and actual exams but worked hard and got brilliant results.
Not every situation can be allowed for. A friend of one daughter’s father was tried and sent to prison while she did her GCSEs.

He passed all his GCSEs at grade 5 and got a 7 in one.
I know that sounds not great for most but for him it was excellent.
He can now go on to sixth form and study subjects where reading and writing not as essential.

I wonder how many children have struggle with undiagnosed dyslexia over the years. My grandson was only diagnosed in his second year at uni.

Well done your GS AGAA4, he must have put in a lot of study time to do so well. You must be very proud of him. I hope he succeeds just as well in his A levels.

Back in 2019, one of my GSs broke his wrist (football!) halfway through GCSEs and had to dictate his exams, including Maths, to the school secretary. He told us that she didn't know the sign for a square root! He didn't get the grade he should have had, but was allowed to continue and did fine at advanced Maths in the International Baccalaureate and at university.

Cannot recall having received any oraise, reward for passing exams. Parentsxseemed to accept you either did or you didn't. For my own family, it was a Well Done. On graduations tgey all 3 of them either started out on world-wide travels or moved to cities for work. That was when they were financially rewarded, which was cheaper than paying to support all 3 at the same time at Uni.

We have one GD who got her GCSE grades yesterday, fortunately all at the highest grade. She has worked very hard and as recognition we have bought her a large bottle of her favourite designer perfume.
It might last until the A level results, when she can have another one!😂

GG13 the school should have applied for Special Consideration at the time of your GS’s accident. It’s not too late and hopefully they will write to the exam board now.
Our DS had a major op on this knee in the lead up to his GCSEs and couldn’t do the practical element of a particular subject.He had Special Consideration applied.

Lovely to share their achievements. I too have two gran daughters one with a level and the other with GCSe results. Happy they both passed and are pleased with their results.

Well done to those with success, to those who are “disappointed for their DGC”, although they’ll feel it is, it’s not the end of their world, they can resit or take a different part.

Our wonderful young people are so much more than their exam results.

I see no issue with giving small gifts, monetary or otherwise, for any kind of success or effort.

GG13 Truly hope your DDGS makes a full recovery and is allowed to resit or given some form of credit.

I agree with that last sentiment.
My GS2 didn’t get good grades at GCSE and his place at 6th form college was in doubt.
Staff at his school said he should still be given a chance so college gave him a place.
He excelled in A levels , decided to go for an Apprenticeship instead of University and is now in the process of setting up his own business.
He is also considering doing a degree with OU once he feels he can devote the time to it which will certainly be some time in the future.

Never worry too much about top GCSE grades, GrannyGravy13. Yes, they're a good indication which direction to go in, but a couple of years down the line and they become less important to show what you're really made of!

Oh, poor laddie! What a shame - but it's good that he can still carry on in sixth form. I'm surprised that his school didn't suggest appealing on medical grounds though.

Our GC had mixed results, unfortunately he passed out during his first exam.

He was taken to hospital where they discovered he had broken his wrist at lunchtime playing football and he hadn’t realised. It was the pain and delayed shock which caused him to pass out.

He failed that exam, passed all the others, but not with the grades he was predicted.

Still high enough to go to VI form fortunately.
