Gransnet is for grandparents. Let's keep it that way

I totally agree that Gransnet should be open to everyone. - After all, "in real life" we don't only mix with people who are mirror images of ourselves. Imagine how dull that would be!

JJ33 Elegran's post was not harsh. She was simply making the point that Gransnet is one word. No apostrophe to indicate 'belonging to'. She was not correcting punctuation. That's how I understood her post.

I understood it too. But it was a genuine accident. My punctuation is good other than when the computer intervenes. Anyway I thought it was considered impolite to comment on punctuation. I’m sure there was a thread about it, some while ago

Yes Grans can be men or women and as has been said there are very few men. Not recently but in the past I have noticed a fair bit of misandry in some of the comments and this may be scaring them away.

I'm happy to read posts from anyone in the main. Younger parents are far more likely to use Mumsnet but we do have some who find MN a tad immature at times and welcome the logic (rather than emotion) of more mature folk.

I do agree with this. There are no doubt many young people who prefer to seek the advice from those of us on Gransnet who are more mature and experienced, both in life and in parenting skills. Of course, those posters are more than welcome to ask for advice here.

However, there are sometimes posts from young people that would be far better suited to being posted on Mumsnet. Not because we don't welcome younger posters and their problems, but simply because better advice could be offered by other younger people who have experienced the same issues more recently. Most of us here on Gransnet are probably way beyond the age of experiencing some of the scenarios we read about sometimes on posts here ... hence the reason I think they'd get better advice from someone younger.

The internet is called the world wide web for a reason. It wasn’t meant to be exclusive. People will always feel justified in their discriminations and entitlements. The reality is that this is a micro example of why bigotry persists. You don’t get to dictate who belongs and who doesn’t. If the openness of a website bothers anyone, maybe spend less time on the internet where you can control the opinions you are exposed to. Otherwise, learn to cope with diversity of opinion. The inability to do so is your own issue, not anyone else’s.

I truly hope that anyone who wants to continues to post here and anywhere else. No one learns anything from an echo chamber. Peace and love to all!

I've certainly noticed some posts scattered across this site where it's clear the poster would be (shall we put it that way?) happy if one or two posters of a different view to them personally got kicked off. Whew - that was me being particularly tactful in my phrasing there LOL. I could have used the phrase "trying to set up.....". One of the things though of this older agegroup is fewer people fall for things like that and are more inclined to accept there are always going to be different viewpoints about things to their own personal one.

But yep....to me it's obvious that "Gran" means both sexes and that it's just a "general boundary" for discussion by people more in that sort of agegroup.

I doubt many younger women would want to post on here when there’s Mumsnet ( which is much bigger/ busier / and funnier )

I imagine the vast majority of people on here are grandmothers over the age of 55.
But like mumsnet, they’ll be women who aren’t parents, and a few male posters. Which is great as it’s always good to hear opinions from a cross section of society.
But I agree about the age thing, this forum works because it is designed for older people. If lots of younger people started posting it would lose its identity, and we might as well merge with mumsnet.

Gransnet doesn't mean it's just for grandparents. More for people that have life experiences that they can share and hopefully help others with their experiences. I love reading posts from men. Men have experiences same as women. I don't want to belong to anything that excludes people on basis of sex or whether that have grandchildren or no.

Some people can't have children but they have experiences that can help others. Gransnet seems to have over 45's and older so they have lived a life. But younger people pop on for advice.

What I don't like is the amount of trolls and imposter posters that have invaded some threads especially those on the estrangement forum .

The world isn't populated by women but men as well they have a voice and glad they are on Gransnet.

I was a grandma in my 40 s but I think I would’ve preferred mumsnet then. Now I am a gt grandma, this suits me. My friend was a grandma at the ripe old age of 34, we used to tease her about it. I agree with mum2three Mumsnet gives me the heaves these days, quite frankly.

I am a mother and grandmother. My DH (of nine years standing) has posted occasionally on here. He is not a parent but enjoys the company of my grandchildren. He used the name olddudders and I like seeing that some posters on the GM thread remember him as that when they refer to him.

I do have grandchildren, however they are not the motivation for joining GN - I wanted to converse with people in my own age group with whom I have more in common than with a younger demographic.

Some of us - and I've no idea really of how many - will remember a life lived in a very different world, socially, politically, and culturally, from today's world. Although I have no wish to turn the clock back, 'life' in Britain (and elsewhere) in the 40s/50s etc was an era that helped to shape who we are now.

Jackiest Iwas born mid 1940s , so my hey day, was the 60s . A time of great change, andI agreee wholeheartedly with what you say. We have gained a lot, but lost a great deal also.

Going back to the original post, No, I do not agree with the OP, either.

Gransnet is a gathering place for anyone over 50, with no discrimination against age or sex or family type - eg. grandmas, grandpas, mothers or childless. In fact, I would prefer it were renamed to Grandsnet (or something better) to stop this confusion.
