Long distance grand parenting

grumpygranella, don't take it personally. Six year olds can get distracted, and are easily bored. Sitting in front of a screen, with their grandparent, may not be the most exciting thing they could be doing right at that moment. Although, of course, for us, it probably is!

I think, when that happens, we all need to be content with a quick greeting from GC, a chat with mum or dad, and waving them goodbye, and blowing kisses, until next time.

New member here. Seems just what I was looking for. Three of my grands are 6,14, 15. The two older ones seem to be managing fine and will have cursory conversation with me on video calls. The 6 year old used to love playing snakes and ladders and hangman over video calls and read books but now she doesn't even want to talk to me. I think she gets upset that I am not there. Do any of you have ideas of other games and ways to communicate over video calls. Any suggestions appreciated.

My 3 grandchildren live in Thailand which has the strictest rules re entering the country. Even when other restrictions ease I may not be able to see them for a very long time. We do have regular what's app sessions but it's always bittersweet.They grow up so quickly that its really hard not sharing their daily lives. I keep hoping things will get better and international travel will re open.but.from all accounts it will be a very long time until anyone from UK will be allowed into Thailand and they cant come out as they'll need to do 2 weeks quarantine in a state validated facility ( ie very expensive hotel) when they re enter.
Any tips from other long distance grandparents on staying.positive would be gratefully received.

My three grandchildren are in Hong Kong and I get regular daily FaceTime calls with my daughter and the girls. I get taken around the apartment under beds, zooming across bookshelves put into dolls houses , close ups with the dog and cats. All the movement of the phone hurts my eyes and makes me feel queasy but it’s all worth it to join them for breakfast (when l should be in bed) and to see them.

My two grandsons are in Hong Kong, age 5 and 2. I would love suggestions about keeping in touch with them. We do regular facetime, as well as zooms with son and lovely daughter in law.

Esspee, that's exactly what I'm wondering ... she must think all of her grandparents live in a mobile phone! I often wonder how she'll react to us when we eventually get to see her properly again?!

Thanks Esspee - will try that if I get an iPad for Christmas usually on MacBook.

This made me smile. We've not been able to see our little GD at all this year, due to travel restrictions (we live in different countries), but, even at the age of 2, she has become very interactive with us on a mobile phone. She often takes us on the swing and tells us to 'hold on tight' ... or puts us down the slide, to great squeals of laughter! I don't think it does mummy's, or daddy's, mobile much good, but we enjoy being able to take part in her fun, albeit it remotely!

Well tonight’s session was painless. Violin practice had been completed earlier.
Tomorrow is the concert. No audience due to Covid but it is being filmed and of course I will be sent the link.
The zip line has been dismantled, Barbie’s funfair was subject to compulsory closure, so let’s see what tomorrow brings. ?

What a brilliant child! Should go far, violin or no violin. Such imagination and enterprise may well keep daddy in a comfortable old age!

Sounds like great fun! I love when children use their imagination to invent new games. Maybe your son will have to get a special cheap phone to give grandma new experiences ?
