Grandparents Day 2015

I know what my ex-husband would say.. "HUH, another day to line the manufacturers pockets".
I think I agree with him on this.

In France they also have a special day to celebrate grandparents, but the children are/were expected to offer some daffodils on that day or so I believe as I have not followed that one up.

Grandparents' Day at my grandchildren's school is delightful. It is neither patronising nor an opportunity to see a G.P.. Grandparents are alive longer nowadays and this is an opportunity to see our GC in school, something I would suggest most grandparents are interested in. Our children send in family photos ( I am grateful my daughter sent a flattering one!), we have a little concert/ service (Catholic school), then a cup of tea and a cake made by the children. They then take us to their classroom and take pride in showing us everything!!!!! We are introduced to their friends. It is lovely and we now have inside knowledge of school.

Took me a while to work out why GPS were at school all afternoon when they are so overworked and its so hard to get an appointment.

Definitely NO to a vile, commercially driven 'Grandparents' Day'.

I am just wondering as my mum is still going strong how long before we get Great Grandparents Day?

Agree totally Indinana. plus we have already had our special day as Mothers or Fathers.

Our DGS's school have an annual Grandparents Day where all the GPs visit for a couple of hours in the afternoon - sometimes the children put on a show, sometimes we join them in the classroom.
Yes I agree with nannienet that it makes the children feel special. But as for it making the 'older people feel special' no, sorry, that is terribly patronising. Many GPs these days lead busy, interesting lives. We certainly don't sit at home with the cat on our lap waiting for our GC's school to brighten up our days once a year with an invitation to their Grandparents' Day .

I think Grandparents day can be very special! When I worked at school as a teaching assistant (only left 2 years ago) we invited Grandparents and older neighbours into school to look around, join in an Activity and a cuppa. It made the children feel special and the older people feel special and speaking to them they seemed to love it! Grandparents don't need to have shop bought things as gifts,Grandchildren can make cards and pictures, you can't buy those sort of gifts from the shop!

Bit difficult as it is on a Sunday.

It's a day when your grandchild asks you to join them at school for lunch.....think I might be busy!

Must be new....and I've been a Granny for 10 years! Usually get thrown in with Mother's Day/ Father's Day.

According to interflora (and they would know) Grandparents Day UK is the 4th October 2015. I agree with you all, it is just a money making scheme. Surely grandparents are parents, and we already have a mothers and fathers day. Why do we need a grandparents day.

It's a day for greeting card producers, florists and restaurants etc to make a bit more money by suggesting we need something we never knew we were missing.

Oh come on! another day when you can guilt-trip your offspring (and their offspring) because they a) didn't know about it. b)forgot to get you something. c) got you something you didn't like.
When is it? Can't decide if I should drop loud hints before it or mention it afterwards with a little sigh!

I am still honoured by my DSs on Mother's Day. Why on earth should I want a GPs' day as well?

Oh no I wouldn't want it.

It will only be a made-up day to get money out of us! I won't be expecting the event to be acknowledged by my family, whenever it might be!

I had no idea there was such a day. What's it for?
