What goes around, comes around they say & fashions certainly do seem to cycle around over the decades or centuries - like puff sleeves, vinyl records, underfloor heating.

What once familiar items/ styles though, do you think will fade away never to return?

Starting us off with wallpaper....

havent looked around ,much lately, but I think it was the 70's when there was that vogue for painting 3 walls and then having one wall papered with either bold stripes or zigzags of colour. Not my cup of tea then or now! And again about that time I think it was the brown and orange colours that were everywhere.

Yep we had 3 black walls and one orange, looked fabulous with white furniture. Can't imagine having that now. I have all white now, some would say equally crazy but easy to touch up.

Rocketstop2 Glad the Blown Air heating has brought back memories for you. My children were seven and four years old when we bought our house with BA heating.
The vents were just above the skirting boards. There was a lever to open and close the vents.
Last week my daughter and I did a tour of the houses we lived in during her childhood. I wondered if the 70's house still had the BA system.

I don't think these will return....In the sixties and seventies, plastic loose tea dispensers that you fixed to a wall, they came in bright red or bright blue plastic and were shaped like rockets. A quick push on the button measured out a spoonful of loose tea leaves into the pot.
A very tempting diversion for a child to casually push the lever , thus depositing tea all over the floor !!

Blown Air central heating. We had it in a new house in the 1970's. I've never come across this method of heating since.

We had that in my parent's house ! Did yours have like big square cardboard filters with sort of chicken wire in them ?
There were vents at the bottom of the walls and you pushed a metal lever to open or close the vent to shut off heating in that room.
That brought memories back Aldom !

I've said this four times so far about wide-leg trousers (loon pants, bell-bottoms, boot-legs, etc): "They're so hideous, they'll never come back..." Ho hum.
Those baggy "harem" trousers with the crotch just above the knee - which harems inspired those, exactly?
And skin-tight leggings that flatter absolutely nobody and never have - once they're gone, surely never again???!

I had hessian in one house when we moved in. It was awful trying to get it off

JamesandJon33 Mon 19-Oct-26 18:28:22

Hessian on the walls !

IC handthenback I hope you're not right but I get where you're coming from.

I think even young people will miss it when/ if it's gone. The sense of mission as well as profit. The World Service & all the "soft" influence & status that gives our small nation.

Grandmabatty Mon 19-Oct-26 15:58:04

Horrible stuff! It brings back bad memories trying to scrape it off walls, particularly if it was painted over

JenniRen Mon 19-Oct-26 15:37:27

Woodchip wallpaper - whoever thought that was a good idea?
Other types of wallpaper are becoming quite fashionable again.

Cassette music tapes and videos.

I do wish this autumn's sludgy colours for clothes would fade away.

We've still got warm air heating and it's brilliant for warming the house quickly so we don't need to put the heating on in advance just when we really need it. It's also good for drying washing in bad weather.

icanhandthemback Mon 19-Oct-26 14:26:33

Sadly, the BBC. I don't think they'll last once all of us oldies disappear. Young people are just not interested in the programmes until it has been sold on to a streaming channel.

Aldom, yes, it does! Bought it from Lakeland (are we allowed to advertise?) a few years ago. We have access to large cuts of meat so I chop into smaller pieces and then mince. Beautiful and no bits of gristle or fat.

We had blown air heating with vents on wooden floors in some rooms and above skirtings in others. It was really warm. can't remember what the upstairs was like it was a good while ago.

When we moved into our ex council house 27 years ago it had blown air heating. I'd never come across it before but I love it. When it comes on it only takes a few minutes to heat the room and l often don't need to have it on for long. Not having radiators gives us more scope for arranging furniture. I find that the upstairs rooms stay quite comfortable with the warmth from downstairs. We had a new boiler when the government were handing out grants and it's been very trouble free.

We had blown air heating in our new build house in Scotland back in the mid seventies. The air vents were mostly downstairs but there was one on the upstairs landing. It was very effective and we never felt the lack of heating in the bedrooms despite the sometimes Baltic temperatures. My children were very young at the time with one in terry nappies. I used to put the concertina style airer directly over one of the vents and everything dried in no time. Those were the days when heating was cheap enough that we didn’t worry about the cost.

Aldom Sun 18-Oct-26 11:16:06

I agree Monica. Ours was a good heating system. I wonder if the system is still in those houses all these years later.
PS have you seen my two private messages Monica? flowers

I had blown air central heating too, in the first house we had after marrying in 1981. It only worked downstairs and wasn't terribly effective.

Our first house had blown air central heating. It was superb . I have never had a house since that was so evenly heated. and where the system was so effective. Ours was a whole house system with warm air vents in every room upstairs and down.

The systems became unpopular because they were cheap and easy to install and became very popular with local authorities for council housing and because they they tried to economise further by failing to duct the heating to upper floors instead, just blowing air out at ground floor level and relying on hot air rising, which in small homes with small rooms and doors and furniture, it didn't.

I used to love the brown and orange wallpaper. We didn't have it but our next door neighbours did. One wall in their dining room. I was secretly envious. But we did have a beautiful Denby 'Arabesque' coffee set.... brown and orange.

poppysmum Sun 18-Oct-26 10:59:18

I’d never heard of blown air central heating, but a current Internet ad is offering a Device to sit on top of your radiators and blow the hot air around the room. Perhaps that’s the modern version.
