Death certificates

This reminds me of the problems that I had finding my maternal grandfather's records. I found him as a child in the 1891 and 1901 censuses and his birth certificate and then nothing.

It turns out that he was known by the second of his Christian names and reversed the order when he enlisted and married.

Try searching again with name variations included, and reduce any middle names to initials.

You won’t get actual service records from WW2 online as they contain personal information so are closed to the public, however as your father has died you may be able to obtain copy from the MoD - see below

Just a thought, but years ago some children were brought up by grandparents, and used their surname...if you could find his birth certificate that might help..

We didn’t try misspelling of surname but I think everything else.
Funnily enough I can’t find his service record either It’s like he didn’t exist!

I have found ScotlandsPeople excellent. Have you tried searching including name variations, as sometimes a transcription contains a mistake, and also a couple of years after the date of death?

We searched on the official government site and were willing to pay. Had the parish and even the cemetery but still no certificate. Tried full name and every variation too.

have you tried Scotlands people...make sure his name is the exact spelling ,and the year he died...if he died 1990..I would put from 1989...1992...and the area he died.. when his name comes up...as it's less than 50 years you will have to send for his certficate, there is an option for this...good luck.

Do you know which Parish he was buried/cremated in? They often have records
