Gosh - these tracks bring back memories. mine was At the Hop by Danny and the Juniors and it's still a favourite. Whenever I hear it I have to get up and dance. When we got out first record player we were allowed 10 78s - Reet Petite, Diana, Great Balls of Fire and Peggy Sue were some of them.
Will today's youngsters remember their first download?

Hummingbird what a lovely story! 
My dad bought our first Dansette record player and with it, the top ten singles at the time, including Jim Reeves 'He'll Have To Go' and Russ Conway 'Side Saddle' both of which my parents liked. Yawn!

That's what I call ideal parenting.
My mum wouldn't let me have a record player as she said I couldn't afford to buy records anyway, so she bought me a transistor radio instead. She was right, of course, and I listened to it non stop. I had to go to my boyfriends house to listen to my one and only record; the Pink Floyd one. hummingbird; I bet you remember that morning so vividly .
A detour from the OP I know, this was a much later record purchase of mine but I practically wore the vinyl smooth! Great to hear it again, just look at the enraptured no-longer-young faces in the audience, but seeing what's happened to his lovely flowing locks is a bit of a shock

I loved the story of Sweet Baby James; he had to write it quickly as gift to his friend's child; just imagine having that song written about you . Dan Fogelberg was very much of the same time/ilk. I really must get my head round these links; on other forums we have great long threads of utube links. A great way to get to hear new music or stuff you wouldn't normally play. By the way, if anyone lives in the Derby/Nottingham area we have Ashley Hutchings and Blair Dunlop playing at our village hall on Friday night. Tickets haven't sold out yet, and we do want a packed room; this is quite a coup for our little village. Anyone interested just pm me for details.
