How much does a gardener cost?

Gwyllt sadly my hard worker gardener told me yesterday he is leaving. His gf isn’t happy here so they are moving to where she comes from miles away. I now have to find someone else which isn’t going to be easy for my large garden. I’ve had the problem in the past finding someone.

£20 for a small lawn in central London. We pay extra for other things as needed. We have a shared garden and the lady has two lawns similar size to ours and gives him £20. She supplies him with biscuits and tea.

Yes , he brushes sand in between but tbh it doesn’t really stop the weeds coming through eventually . As part of the deal, he has agreed to spray weed killer as soon as the weeds start to show. I have known him since I moved here in 2008 .. He also does my window cleaning and other odd jobs.

Yes, he will use weed killer (although I don't like it, it's impossible to weed the drive by hand) and then use sand, of we might brush it in between. It seems to be a rather 'wildflower friendly' neighbourhood here 😀
I know block paving can be resin coated but one quote we had was just ridiculously high.

We pay ours £80 for two hours every fortnight. That's the going rate round here.

I don't at the moment have the gardener regularly but use him for tasks I now can't manage like trimming overgrown shrubs. He is extremely knowledgeable and works extremely hard. He has even taken away excess greenery that wouldn't fit in my green bin. He charges £25 an hour.

Ex dancer it’s quite hard to get a gardener, most make a decent living lawn mowing, I’ve found a handyman who seems able to do pretty much anything. He spent half a day with me, doing eg heavy trimming and digging that my husband used to don

Yorkshire - £20 an hour including taking waste away. She come about once every month to 6 weeks as I have a large garden and cannot keep on top of it.

Plants growing out of patio slabs - she has a sort of electric cutting slicing tool which keeps them trim. Snag with power washing patio slabs - it actually removes more and more of the old filling between the slabs and causes more weeds.

I do however break my own rules on my long path as regards chemicals which is expensive Resin bound and squirt them with weedol. They are surface growing in any bit of dirt that settles

£20 for mowing a very small front lawn (a bit of a shaped lawn ) takes him about 20 minutes - and just paid £180 for cutting back the shrubs, £150 for power-washing the drive.(fairly large ) …..Back garden is all paved.
As Celine-Anne says, although I live in a little culdesac, there is a lane 2 doors from me and everyone uses it to get to the main road.

Does he/she brush anything into the cracks after power washing the drive? The weeds here are prolific and we seem to have moss growing between the bricks this year, after all the winter rain. Someone is coming to do it soon (I hope!). He's very good, does lawns, prunes but is very busy.

Do specify exactly what you mean by 'gardener'. I asked AgeUK for recommendations and chose a young man who didn't expect me to agree to set hours (some firms wanted me to sign up for Xhours per month so in bad weather I was paying them to sit in their van and smoke).
But after a few weeks I realised he knew almost nothing about plants and shrubs and was really only interested in mowing the lawn etc.

My gardener charges £22.50 an hour. It is a large garden around 3/4 of an acre. He tackles the lawns, pruning shrubs and trees, dead hedging etc. He comes every 2 weeks and does a couple of hours

I think you must expect to pay a bit more for a small job as the guy has to travel from job to job

£25 ph - East Midlands

Our gardener designed our garden and takes responsibility for doing what ever needs doing - we have no lawns but she looks after the pots too. It usually takes 5 or 6 hours every 6 weeks or so. Obviously we pay for compost etc as well.

£35 per hour for experience and anything from £20-30 for just mowing per hour here.

I pay my gardener £60 every visit, fortnightly from the end of March through to late October, but it’s a big garden and the ‘crew’ comprises 3 chaps, so I guess that’s £20 an hour, although in high Summer, they often aren’t here a full hour.

I think this is on the cheaper side as it's been that for 6 years now.

Six or seven years ago my dh charged £12 ph. He never increased his price, which included clearing up and taking all the branches and grass etc to the tip for them.
I knew he seriously undercharged but he was happy. A Prostate cancer diagnosis stopped him and without doubt he was missed by his ‘ladies’.
Now we could do with some garden help it seems we need to prepare ourselves for twice the cost.

It really depends on whereabouts in the UK you live. Here in Bucks the rate is ariund £25 an hour.

£24 an hour for 7-8 hours once a fortnight. Keeps everything mown, strummed, hedges cut etc in my 1 acre garden, but does sometimes makes serious mistakes. He works very hard and does get lots done however so I have to keep an eye on him and accept a fruit tree being hacked back at the wrong time of year. It has taken my greengage 3 years to recover.

My lady weeds and prunes, just put her charges up £1 to £21 per hour, S Hampshire, she comes 3/4 times a year.

I have a young man and his girl friend who come all year round every other Friday for one hour costs me £50. He does the mowing of two largish lawns and trims bushes and trees while she does weeding, sweeping and wipes down window frames.
I’ve found this system works best for me as living on a main road I like the garden to always looks tidy. I also have them to paint the fence regularly, power wash the patio and this month they will clean the fascia and replace a broken step. I noticed on Friday they had washed out two bins as well without being asked. They dont mess about, they get on with the jobs and I’m really very pleased and hope they stay.
