I live in a Victorian terraced house with quite a large back yard, it's quite shady in the morning but gets the sun all afternoon.
I'd like to brighten it up with some plants...can anyone please recommend the best for growing in pots (I am a novice!)

If you have room for fairly large pots you could plant euonymus or hebe. Both evergreen - euonymus has variegated leaves, hebes have flowers in spring.
