Potatoes - how best to store?

We are quite new to gardening and we were so excited last year to have our first crop of large potatoes, but DH dug a whole lot up at once, too many to eat and even with give aways we had 2 big bucket fulls left over. He put them in the garage in a plastic bucket and covered them loosely with a black bag, but after a few weeks most had gone green sad. What is the best way of storing our potatoes so they will last, please? This year's crop is promising to be stupendous! smile

I always seem to be trimming roots off potatoes that looked fine when I first had them.

They need to be really dry before you store them, and then a hessian sack kept somewhere as dark as possible is ideal. In a plastic bucket they will 'sweat' and that leads to rot. Any light makes them go green. Cool but not frosty.

Thanks! I think those were the mistakes made - not letting them dry off properly and plastic bucket no good. I'll do a better job of supervising this year grin

Cool, dark, well-ventilated place.

They need eating before the beginning of the year though as they will start to grow and become soft. We keep ours in hessian sacks in the loft.

I've got a potato bag from Lakeland and it certainly keeps them longer than previously

Thanks again ... we made the mistake of thinking it would be all so easy. From all your replies, it is, as long as you know what you're doing!
