I've a mp tree n a pot which should have been planted long ago. It survived and thrived through the winter of 2010/11 but last winter turned brown - new shoots are comng up through the base - should i cut the thing down to the lowest brown branches or let it get on with its own thing?

I hope you will not be planting it anywhere near the house. If you do, future generations will curse you. I see so many front gardens where all the light is kept from the rooms by a huge, though attractive, tree. In the right setting they are gorgeous.
