A neighbour told me today that from 1st October we will have to pay the NY Times to use it, has anyone else heard that?

I’ve just looked online and can’t see anything at all about this.
I subscribe the the NYT and it hasn’t been mentioned there.
Wordle has bought millions of new users / readers to the NYT so personally I think that it seems unlikely?
