What has happened to kiwi fruit?

I haven’t bought kiwi fruit for years but was tempted by on of those 4 packs. They are a strange light yellow colour inside and very bland tasting. Was I unlucky or are they now all like that? I used to love the bright green colour in a fruit salad and their tangy taste.

I love the yellow kiwis and they’re full of nutrients. Not so keen on the skin .

Just eaten the last one. I noticed the sticky label on the fruit said Sungold so I guess that’s what it was. The skin was going crinkly but it was very juicy and tasted much better than the first one I ate.

The problem I find is that Kiwis take forever to ripen. Even the ready to eat packs. I’ve always got them on the windowsill trying to ripen them!

I’ve given up on kiwi fruit lately. They seem as hard as bullets and by the time they’re soft enough to eat they’re wrinkly and unpleasant. A bit like me!

That sounds like the Tesco "ready to eat ones" - which aren't ready to eat and never become ready to eat!

I bought some before we went off to work in Italy at the beginning of April and forgot about them.
I've just had them this week, NOW they're soft enough to eat!

I like rambutang, a bit like lychee, but never see them here.

When my family was posted to Singapore I used to travel there during school holidays (boarding school in England) and I loved those!
Once, when I was about 14, I decided to bring some back with me (not so many restrictions then!) but I'd also picked up some ants with them and they were crawling all over the cabin, to the horror of the cabin staff!

I buy mine from Aldi but let them ripen, they are the green sort. I've tried to eat the skin but it's unpleasant so I peel them and have one most mornings as part of my breakfast. i really enjoy them.

They are quite good if one suffers with constipation.

We love the golden kiwis, especially the New Zealand ones when in season , buy from Sainsburys or Tesco . There is a similar variety from Italy but the taste is not so sweet. Cut across the fruit and spoon out the flesh like eating an egg .
Delicious!!

I halve them and eat everything inside them but leave the skins as they give me a rash.

You scrub the hairs off before you eat them WWM

I read that you can eat the skin. I did try - but struggled and not keen, but I bet they are fibre rich.

I read that too and tried it. Might try putting the skin in my Nutribullet but I’m certainly not going to try to chew it again. Weird eating something hairy. I have realised that kiwi fruit lasts for ages in the fridge as I went away for a few weeks and, on returning home found one that had been left in the fridge and it was still ok. I did become a bit obsessed with kiwi fruit recently having not really ate them before but they’re a bit too expensive to binge on.

I bought the gold Kiwis last week, they were sweeter and softer than the usual green ones, or maybe they were just riper.

The golden ones are a different variety , we prefer them so juicy tasty and sweet.. Tesco had none this week.

BlueBelle Fri 22-May-26 18:16:09

I really, really don’t like kiwi fruit

Lell Fri 22-May-26 18:10:11

The golden ones are in fact golden kiwis. I prefer them to the others. They are sweeter. There are red ones as well. They are even sweeter.

I tried eating the skin as recommended by Michael Mosley but my mouth swelled up too and I didn't like it.

When I was in New Zealand I had a kiwi for breakfast in a hotel and saw the lady at the next table watching me peel it and laughing - apparently no-one peels them out there! Albertina I used to be allergic to them years ago but recently tried them again and found I am ok with them now.

Estrellita Fri 22-May-26 16:28:36

I got some from our local greengrocer and they are lovely. I only eat the gold ones. All the ones I got from (various) supermarkets were hard and flavourless. Even the top range supermarkets.

Jojo1950 Fri 22-May-26 15:23:21

Love the Golden Kiwi.

Cabowich Fri 22-May-26 14:50:07

The golden kiwis are delicious - sweeter than the green ones which are too tart for me.

Nanny123 Fri 22-May-26 14:46:04

I find the same with Jersey potatoes they just don’t taste like they used to
