Seville Oranges

Yippee I got mine in Sainsbury's this morning.

I got out DM's recipe that she passed on to me from when I was a child. There was her writing, and there was DH's too, converting pounds and pints into kilos and litres. I did cry a bit, remembering all the years we made marmalade together.

But DS is coming on Wednesday to take me to my eye appointment at the hospital. He likes marmalade. I have been and am fortunate.

Ok my local Waitrose has them so I bought a bag. Have another go at marmalade.

MaMade consists of Seville oranges charley68.

It tastes much better than ‘bought’ marmalade.

My local Morrison's had them 1 week ago, and I bought 2kg. This is what I usually buy, and I have made one batch of marmalade today, and I will make the second lot tomorrow. I may buy another kg next week, if I have enough empty spare jars!
I much prefer to make marmalade from Seville oranges.
I have never used the Mamade tin to make marmalade.

I got mine from Morrisons on Friday. You’ve got to be quick or they are gone. They freeze well so if you haven’t time to deal with them you can put them in the freezer as they are and use them later.

Why do we only get Seville oranges at this time of year? I ask because when I was in Seville with orange trees lining the streets there was blossom, green oranges and ripe oranges on the trees at the same time.

Lovely photos of Seville, we used to spend so many winters travelling round Spain in our little vw van. And those pics brought it all back in one big rush..doing a bit of wallowing here...

My local Tesco has Mamade amongst the jams, I think.

They had none before Christmas.

But stuff gets moved around, it’s often not in the obvious place.

If I can’t find something, I collar a staff member and ask!

If I can’t get Seville oranges I’ll give the Mamande a try. I’m not sure though where to find it in my supermarket (Tesco). Jams? Baking? Tinned fruit?

Another vote for Mamade here. I add finely chopped crystallised ginger, and it adds a really good flavour (providing you like ginger!)

Waitrose have organic Seville oranges and I made marmalade with them this year and last. I’ve been making marmalade for over 40 years and my family say this has been the best ever. The organic oranges have a looser skin than traditional Seville oranges but they are fresh and fruity. As soon as I saw them this year I bought a bag and marmalade made for 2026.
My mother made 3 fruit ( orange, grapefruit and lemon) marmalade all year round.

I bought my sevilles with my Christmas shop from Ocado, I thought they were very early but grabbed them whist I could. Then I came out to Spain and they are lining all the streets! ( But you’re not allowed to pick them)

I always make marmalade at this time of year. I’ve done two batches already, and there’s another 6 lbs in the kitchen waiting for me to start! I too, use less sugar, have to cook a it longer to get a reasonable set. There is an independent greengrocer in Twickenham who has Seville oranges every year, and weighs them out in pounds!

My local farm shop has them. Idk if I will bother this year or not. Mamade is not quite so good but better than a lot of bought ones. I paid over £5 for a small jar of marmalade made locally. It is nice but what a price so maybe I will bother this year and make my own.

Like Dodo I look out for cheap oranges, lemons, limes and grapefruit and make marmalade at various times of year- not just when Seviĺle oranges are in season. I give it to charity sales and it's always very popular! Red grapefruit, often for sale in Aldi, add a good flavour and bitterness when mixed with ordinary oranges.

Can't bear the smell of marmalade cooking. My parents made marmalade every year. My mother accused me of making a fuss about the smell. One year she was at the greengrocers buying the oranges and bumped into a friend who was there doing the same. The friend said she made marmalade every year but the one thing she couldn't abide was the smell. After that my mother accepted that I wasn't being awkward and that the smell really did affect me!! It didn't however stop them making it! I never ate any but it was well loved by everyone else. P.S. I still don't eat marmalade.

Anyone tried looking on the fruit stalls at the market? That's where I got mine recently. (Doncaster) At other times of the year I used lemons, and/or a combination of lemons and whatever oranges are around.

I love lime marmalade. Got given a huge bag of limes to find homes for (I get known as the woman who does pass things around, but never limes before) I mentioned this the lady who makes mine and got a jar back

I saw some last week at my greengrocers.
I must confess that, making so very much marmalade for my church, I use MAMADE, add loads of lemon juice and get many compliments about the “freshness of the flavour”. (I barely eat the stuff, but have made about 300 pots last year…)

local morrisons have them "intermittently"; which means the marmalade makers have to visit M more often in January.

I used to get mine from an independent grocer ( a ferry and a bus in both directions)

I got mine from Tesco last weekend. I would usually get them from Waitrose but no joy this year.

My cousin was struggling to find some. Supermarkets that had some were sold out, or telling fibs! I found her some at an independent greengrocers across the other side of town. They are organic. We had that shop delivering to us during Lockdown. Anyway, off she shot on the bus and bought some. I'm awaiting my free sample jar!

I couldn't find Seville oranges anywhere. A friend recommended going to Lakeland or Amazon where you can but a large tin of fresh sliced seville oranges. They are additive and preservative free. I took a chance and am so glad I did. It made more than I can use so I gave some jars away, now I'm being asked for more!
