Smoked Salmon out of date

Smell it! That’s what I’d do. After all it has been smoked.

Is it use before or best before? As midgey said smell it or eat a little bit, but if your sense of smell /taste isn't too good it's not always a good indication.

Is it ‘use by’ or ‘best before’?

If the former, I would not be too keen. 11 days over is quite a lot.

And I usually say, ‘oh eat it, it’ll be fine’.

But that sounds rather past best, even for me.

Chucking it out will be preferable to chucking it up.

It has been in the fridge since it was bought, I’ll open and smell and try a little piece. 😱

just eat it i would, but then i take no notice of the dates on things anyway.
many years ago when i was young nothing had a use by date, and most people did not have a fridge so i still use the standard tests used by my mother and grandmother, if it looks alright and smells alright then eat it!

Have to report, even though it smelt ok, it’s gone in the bin, luckily bin collections tomorrow.

Sorry but that made me laugh out loud, not that you were sick, but the thought of your mum putting it in her handbag, I bet she had to throw that bag away 😂😂

Smell it, taste a tiny bit...you can always spit it out and if ok I would eat it. I've done just that with smoked salmon I found under my cheesebox in the fridge, roughly the same vintage. Fishy smelling or slimy is not good.

Wise decision DollyD. Smoked salmon is cold smoked, but not cooked, so it still has bacteria in it, which multiplies over time. I wouldn’t eat it past the use by date.

11 days over the ‘use by’ date is well over. Bin it.
The worst food poisoning I’ve ever had, was from a pack of prepared ‘washed and ready to eat salad’ from a very famous store.

Glad you threw it away. Not worth having food poisoning.

Best before = okay…. Use by = Bin it…. I wouldn’t risk it!!! Is it worth the risk???

I don’t like to waste food but was absolutely the right idea to throw it away. Any chicken or fish lurking in the fridge that is just past its best gets binned by me, once had Salmonella from eating out of date chicken that looked and smelled fine. Never again. It took months for me to recover.

We had some that was just a couple of days out of date, it was an unopened pack and smelt and tasted fine. My daughter was here and I didn't let her anywhere near the pack showing the date, but if it had tasted odd she would have picked it up.
I usually keep things like this in the coldest part of the fridge, or even freeze them sometimes if they have a shorter date than I really need. Salmon defrosts very quickly.

Agree throw away!

I reluctantly threw away some missed uncooked sausages yesterday dated 27/12 .
Fortunately we have a food waste collection so didn’t feel quite so guilty. I added a bag of out of date salad to the vegetable soup I made and that was quite tasty !

I'm glad you threw it, it was way out of date. It's not just the bateriums that are no doubt present but the toxins they have produced too.
Babies can't have smoked salmon until at least one year old, same with honey.
