Frozen onions

I admitted to be lazy GB, but teabag put it better. I would rather be doing something else.

I didn't suggest anyone was lazy Grandmabatty - those were not my words. Onions are available singly by weight, if you only cook for yourself, why would you want to buy a pack?

Well I'm not lazy Calipso and love cooking. However I live alone and buying a pack of onions isn't cost effective. Invariably one or more will have rotted before I can use them all. Frozen onions avoid waste for me. In addition, people who are disabled or have difficulty with their hands eg arthritis might struggle with slicing onions.
Kitty I believe you can buy frozen pearl onions, although I've never seen them in any supermarkets. Frozen sliced onions should be available but I expect the chopped ones are cheaper because of machinery used. Sliced would be more challenging.

It can be find it very difficult or painful to chop things, especially if someone has a condition like arthritis in their hands. Even operating a chopper or food processor isn't always simple. Things like pre-chopped veg can be a godsend in these situations - people shouldn't be so quick to judge.

We have lots of family coming and going over the summer and I want to cook stuff for the freezer.

The stuff I am aiming to cook requires 12 sliced onions in total so life would be easier if I could buy them frozen.

I fully understand. My eyes weep very easily when chopping onions and I cannot chop fast without damaging myself.

I have often wished chopped onions came sliced. Diced onion seem to melt when cooked

Kitty, I’m with you all the way and wish I could solve your problem. I see nothing wrong in making life easier where you can, leaving more time and energy for more interesting things, helping others etc.

And, has anyone else noticed how tough the skins are now?

They are 21p each at Tesco. Not too bad if they are big ones, but sometimes if they are all quite small…

Would rather buy them by weight.

I'm baffled.
Onions are cheap and available all year round. It takes less than a minute to peel and chop one and if you need a big quantity, the food processor is your friend. A bit of planning ahead and you can freeze your own, chopped exactly as you wish. I simply can't see how buying them frozen in a plastic bag is appealing.

But not sliced 'brown' onions - which is my moan. And I do know it's a first world problem.

Tesco sell frozen chopped white onions & sliced red onions.
So useful when you’re feeling lazy!

I freeze my own onions in fact I freeze everything.

If you go on You Tube it tells you how to freeze anything you want.

I do use those, MissA, and I know they do sliced red onions so why not ordinary onions sliced?

Sainsbury do frozen chopped onions, in their 'inspired to cook' range.
They have lots of very good reviews, too.

I don't mind slicing one or two onion but a few of my batch cooking recipes have lots of sliced onions in and I wish I could buy them ready done as I can with chopped ones.

I just buy a whole onion, slice it, put it on a flat tray and freeze it. I store all the veg in glass jars in freezer.
