Turnip, anyone? 😋

I’m not keeping track of who’s who in the Cabinet at all…

I enjoy turnips and sometimes put them in a casserole or make turnip soup.

No, she’s not health. Is she environment or similar?

I have made turnip soup. It was good, but a bit salty as I used ham stock for the base.

Here in Scotland what I know as Swede is called turnip. It's one of the few vegetables I can't stand. The small white turnip is ok chopped up with carrot, with butter added!

It’s hardly anything. I’m amazed we survived.

It’s not a question of what’s native but what we can grow in our climate. Potatoes are now a staple part of our diet but they were never native.

The list might be longer than you think.

Bashed neeps! Scots for mashed turnip. Boiled and mashed like potatoes. Tastes fine.

Cabbage and kale grow fine too, even in the wet districts of the UK. Beans and peas should do well too, if planted once there is no danger of frost.

Precisely merlotgran. And yes, I like turnips and other root vegetables and brassicas grown here - but am missing a nice traditional salad for lunch!

I wonder does she realise that turnips aren’t available on the seasonal menu for February or March?

Can the leaves of turnips be used as salad? I assumed that was what was being suggested, as it is mainly salad vegetables that are in short supply at the moment.

I bought Swede, carrots, beetroot, cabbage, kale and cauliflower at the farm shop earlier this week, that’ll keep us going for a while.

I doubt she has much knowledge of British farming at all Casdon.

I love all vegetables including humble turnips and swedes, and their ugly look-alike celeriac.

Neeps (swedes) and carrots mashed together and seasoned with salt and pepper is a favourite of mine.

I didn't think I liked them but have just enjoyed a bowl of turnip (swede or neep) and coconut soup. Tinned coconut milk as coconuts don't grow in Scotland at our community café. It was warm and comforting

Best seller in the shop where I volunteer was Savoy cabbages and dirty carrots.
The pigeons have polished off my garden .chard and they've done the same to the kale. Still a few leeks but not sure what our ancestors ate. Here in Scotland it was oats and fish I believe. They had the kale too..

Mashed turnips with butter and pepper are delicious I make latkes with grated turnips there is no end to their uses.
