FOOD Shortages England

I’ve grown both swede/neeps, brownish skin, orange flesh and turnips, white skin, white flesh, very tasty too. Never seen any blue ones,
I’m about to plant Christmas potatoes, sprouts, kale, swede and parsnips are in the ground at the allotment.

Exactly Germanshepherdsmum clearly there are variations depending on where you live. Saying that you're not seeing any shortages where you live, isn't saying that those who are seeing them are lying, or that those of us who aren't seeing are 'I'm all right Jack's' and don't give a damn about anyone else.

Let's face it, the shortages we all witnessed last year were due to it being reported there were/would be and those idiots who went out panic buying.

I wish people would stop dismissing what people are actually seeing with their own eyes it's very uncomfortable behaviour.

Yes, and stop describing facts as scaremongering, or encouragement to stockpile. Nobody is suggesting this, just commenting on shortages of certain food items in their local shops. If some of you want to continue sticking your head in the sand about what is starting to unfold, feel free, but some of us are being realistic.

Maybe us Brits should be encouraged to grow more of our own food, like they did in the war? I'm hopeless at that though, i can't even keep a plant alive!?But maybe our own farmers could- and should..Maybe by christmas it may make a difference- or perhaps you greenfingered GN's could grow your own christmas veg? ?Or get together with other familymembers who have what you don't, (covid allowing) and you can share what you have? Between you all you might just have a dinner.Remember its only one day really.

Oh FFS!. Farmers can't get the stuff they have already grown picked due to Brexit ( remember that?).

DH managed to buy tomato juice today, first time in about 3 weeks. So clearly there's no issue and you all just need to get on with it. (that's sarcasm, by the way)

No, it isn't just you, and I am trying very hard ( not succeeding in some cases) not to be very rude to those who infer or even suggest that we should even be considering this. You people who foisted this disaster upon us have a lot to answer for, but I don't suppose you will. Turnips, my arse as Jim Royle would say.

Mind you, dashing from shop to shop to take photographs of well stocked shelves is good exercise I suppose, do you think any of the Blitz spiriteers will post photographs of empty shelves? No, me neither

^Swedes and Turnips are 2 different crops but there is a lot of confusion.^
Sorry to disagree Katie1959 but in Plymouth Market a swede is a turnip, no confusion, no argument, never upset a Janner!

Swedes and turnips come from the same family, but they are different. In England, a swede is a Swedish turnip and is bigger with tougher skin and yellow flesh. Their skins are purple.

I was thinking the same. I rarely go into a supermarket, but taking photos is the last thing on my mind.

From what posters are saying it varies from one area to another. Whilst I do miss my mushrooms when I can’t get them (must take a trip to Essex!) I don’t think they’re exactly suitable for stockpiling, though I do confess to having some homemade mushroom soup in the freezer. ?

Don't bother with north west Essex! I'm told there are shortages and there wasn't any milk in my last online delivery.

No shortages of fruit and veg in Cheshire went to Aldi and Lidl in fact lots of UK produce which pleased me because I always try and buy British. Did notice a few gaps in the freezer section but as I don't eat meat or poultry only fish now and again not a problem. Also went shopping with my daughter to Waitrose no gaps there, lots of stuff reduced as well.

After school shoe/uniform shopping with a 6yr old, 19 month baby DD and grumpy DH all I wanted to do was get in and out of the supermarket as quick as possible.

I took the photographs as someone alleged that those saying that shelves were full locally were not telling the truth.

Problems appear to be sporadic round the U.K.

Swedes are turnips in my part of the country as well the local word is snagger and across the border neeps. Animals eat swedes.
Maybe we will all end up making turnip jam as they did in the war.
Panic buying will only lead to more panic buying and yet more empty shelves like last year. Christmas might have to be cut back by everyone. Maybe a wartime recipe book should be released by someone. I still use a tea loaf recipe from then.

Irony loses its impact when people are denying facts left, right and centre. We can't tell when you are being serious or not. Like pretending that the fact there is no shortage in Thorpe Bay means that all's well with the world. (Wherever Thorpe Bay is....) Or is that irony too? Maybe an irony emoji would help us understand your sense of humour.

Would you rather me lie and do the my life is over because I cannot buy an organic avocado this week if so you will have a very long wait as I can only post about the shelves that I see, as can any other poster.

(FYI Thorpe Bay is a nice little place by the sea in Essex)

Trying to be helpful regarding shortages, especially as Chelmsford is central Essex and easily reached by Public Transport or car.

I work in a local supermarket and we have lots of gaps. Our soft drinks aisle is nearly empty - someone said it’s because of packaging and CO2 shortages at factories. Our food deliveries used to come early in the morning and now don’t come till much later, if at all. We should have had two today and one is now not coming. It might come tomorrow instead, or in place of tomorrow’s? Who knows?! We haven’t a clue. Also they aren’t sending everything we order - yesterday only a third of our order came (over 600 lines were ordered and only around 200 were sent).
Our back up freezers, chillers and stock room shelving are practically empty.
Our bread deliveries used to be every day but these have been reduced to every other day instead now, and these can also just not turn up as happened last week. Result - no bread on our shelves.
I want to ask every customer who moans “did you vote for Brexit?” (Daily Fail territory here) because I’d love to tell them well it’s your fault so suck it up. But I can’t, I’d probably lose my job.
