Sounds delicious Gabriella.. I have a real weakness for croissants. My brekkie/brunch comprised porage with some mixed nuts and almond milk cappuccino (made with stovetop coffee thing). Not sure of cost but cheap enough.
When I make soup and freeze it, once frozen I put into individual bags and stand them up in the freezer like soldiers. It's surprising how much more can be fitted in like that.
There appears to be an Easter veg price war on at the moment. Morrison’s are selling various veg at 3 for £1, plus the roast beef joints are 1/2 price, I got a huge one for about £7.50!
My lunch yesterday was a hot cross bun and a decaffeinated skinny latte (hopefully the skinny counter balances the bun)
Have just popped into Aldi and they have.....Potatoes, carrots, Parsnips, baby plum tomatoes, spring onions and large cauliflowers all for 29p a bag (pots 2.5kg)
Just interesting to read the sometimes strange (to me) things that people have for lunch - speaking of which, mine today is going to be a piece of quiche (leftover from dinner last night), baby plum tomatoes and lettuce , a split pot yoghurt and possibly a mini Bounty bar. No idea of the cost !
I had hummus, homemade, with a bit of olive oil and smoked paprika. Ate it with toast and tomatoes followed by a yogurt (homemade and dirt cheap) with a bit of leftover apple.
I made soup the other day with a big bag of frozen veg from Morrison’s which costs £1, dried red lentils, a few slices of chopped bacon, a tin of tomatoes and a couple of stock cubes. It’s lovely! We eat well but I often find our best meals are made from bits and pieces!
Sorry to do a one-up Coolgran but I was just about to post this. Yesterday in Lidl they had 1kg bags of carrots and parsnips for 19p. Also 1.5kg of potatoes for 29p and 1 kg of shallots for 29p. I think it is perfectly possible to eat cheaply provided you are lucky enough to be near these shops. We are going to have chicken and roasted vegetables tonight and then we'll make soup with what's left which will last for a couple of lunches.
Coolgran your soup sounds a lot like mine! The friends I first made the soup for are vegetarians so I used Marigold bouillon as my stock . My ingredients also included a bag of Pentland Brig kale, and I added the stalks to the root veg which I had roasted in the oven with a drizzle of maple syrup before cooking in the stock. I then whizzed the whole lot with a stick blender, letting it down with a very little lemon juice. As a garnish I tossed some of the leaves in a little olive oil and lemon juice and toasted them gently in the oven (160) A swirl of non dairy (or regular) yogurt finished it off. I fed 6 hungry book club friends plus a helping left over for me!
Coolgran65 Wow! That's cheap but there is no Asda near me and, as my daughter is visiting from York and we're going to the coast today, it'll have to be Saturday before I find the nearest store. Never having been to an Asda I'll prob find lots more to like Did you blitz your soup in a liquidiser after cooking or have it a bit chunky?
Asda had carrots and parsnips at 22p per bag so I got 3 bags, to make soup. Added 2 onions, 3 chicken stock cubes, some garlic. Most expensive ingredients were the stock cubes. Totalled less than £3 for 10 portions. Had one one portion for lunch and 9 individual portions are in the freezer using saved Chinese takeaway containers.
I had 4 chicken nibbles, a large slice of pineapple and a scone with jam and cream. Boiling water to sip at.
Free as my elders' group lunch was provided.
There were also club sandwiches, fruit cake, a mixed fruit platter, tiny savouries, little miniatures = steak or chicken pies, boiled eggs and sponge cake with fresh cream and passionfruit topping. But I didn't want any of that.
Callistemon That was cheaper than mine. I love omelettes but have given up sweet stuff as I'm doing a marathon (all being well) in October. Warm scones with home made jam...tempting.
I had an omelette (no bread with it). How much do two eggs cost? and a sprinkle of grated cheese? Then visited friend who had made scones, served with home-made jam . Free.
No, lemongrove I'm not on an economy drive nor doing the £20pw food challenge as mentioned by MawBroonsback I was just wondering how much I spend on food per day...on average. I don't usually cost my food but I spent £72 in Marks and Waitrose yesterday and wondered how many meals the shop contained. ? It was mostly fruit, salads, veg and dairy with some cod. The walnuts, almonds and Medjool dates were £8.90 and won't last a week but they're (supposedly) good for you.
Oddly enough GabbyG that was my thought too when I read the OP. Why did anyone bother to post. It’s like people taking photos of their meals and posting them on FB.
