I have just had the most delicious snack

Ooh Annsixty and Katye, pobs, I remember it well, delicious and sugar butties too. Well I was brought up in the filthy, impoverished but happy Potteries.
We used to have heart (presumably cows cos it was big) for Sunday roast with sage and onion stuffing which was delicious-wouldn't really thank you for that now?

I wonder if Michael Mosely will read this thread - it's enough to make him croak on the spot
DH used to have condensed milk sandwiches too and apparently subsisted on bread and dripping for supper and had a fried breakfast every morning before school - perhaps this contributed to his heart disease?
On my childhood visits to Holland we ate hundreds & thousands and also chocolate sprinkles sandwiches - yum. Couldn't do that now, far too sickly

Gosh, so many things that I remember... Sugar sandwiches, condensed milk (yy to the tubes for squirting straight in... ), rhubarb with a bag of sugar to dip it in, Yorkshire puds - Mum used to make an extra one for Grandad to have for pudding, cold and sprinkled with sugar, while the rest of us ate my auntie's treacle tart or egg custard... Of course, the one that I loved most was dripping - bread & dripping sandwiches, but especially Saturday teatime, when Grandad and I sat toasting bread on the open fire (and sometimes fishing a slice out of the coals and dusting it off...) then spreading dripping on it, sprinkling it with salt and handing it to the family for tea... Mmmmmm..! Oh, and was anyone else addicted to Horlicks tablets...??

Growing up in the West Country our favourite was treacle and apple sandwiches. Also we had treacle and clotted cream on splits (soft white rolls) and this was called thunder and lightening!

Anyone remember Horlicks tablets?

Granny used to mash a hard boiled egg with spoonful of Bovril (not diluted) and called it 'Bovril spread' which was served on toast. It was surprisingly tasty and was usually provided when we were off school with a cold or flu.

I remember my great granny giving me sliced oranges with glucose powder sprinkled over them as a treat. It's a wonder my granny never damaged us with her home medications one of which was the hot whisky toddy with sugar!! Yuck, yuck, yuck!! Can still taste it and the smell of whisky still reminds me of toothache.

Lots of wonderful but sickly crystallised fruit in Sicily this week- and wonderfully light little almond squiggles ...

A friend brought us an Italian Christmas Cake once, not a light Panettone, but more of a flat round which seemed to be just crystallized fruits and nuts.
It was delicious, but took some chewing!!

Favourite snacks these days are savoury rather than sweet. Had an arancino yesterday in Catania- typical Sicilian snack made of risotto rice shaped into a pyramid with a bolognese type filling, rolled in breadcrumbs and fried (yes Mamie- I know- lots of carbs!)

Yvonne, we also had raw rhubarb sticks to dip into a cup of sugar. It's a wonder I've got any teeth left with all that acid and sugar.
Never did us any 'arm though!

Yes remember Horlicks tablets yum! Soft boiled eggs, bread and butter mashed up in a cup, lots of pepper added. Milk raw eggs and sugar whisked together, to help build me up, I was a skinny child, must be working now Does anyone remember Virol? We were given a spoonful of that everyday.

Im making paste eggs at the weekend, yum, they always taste better than ordinary boiled eggs

Salad cream sandwiches are my favourites.
Have you tried the Ritz crackers with the chocolate in the middle? YUM!

Kittye I loved Virol but not Scott's Emulsion , which was white, gloopy and fishy. That was to build me up.
I bought Virol for my children. Must have been a form of torture for them as I only have to mention it to make them heave.
You can still by a similar product in health food shops.

BB I loved the taste of Virol too. I must look in the health food shop as I think I need it in my old age. I wonder if they do a "diet " version as I don't need building up now ; )
