Champagne. Prosecco. Cava.

I agree with nansue Prosecco for me too. We've had the Asda one at £6 a bottle and it is very drinkable, makes a good Bellini too. We went to a wedding where the toast to the Bride and Groom was with a Prosecco no one was any the wiser that it wasn't 'champers' in fact there were a few comments about how nice it was. Prosecco every time!

I love fizz so much that I am beginning to "go off" still wine. When we are in France we buy a car-load to take home. Crème d'Alsace eing our Lidl France favourite.

The moment I get fizz in my hand I feel like a party girl!

Just checked the Mauler website- they have 18 different 'bubbly' available- so there would be something for every taste.

Lots of 'vins mousseux' in France and Switzerland too- which can be excellent. Our local is called Mauler, and it is brilliant and excellent value.

But really, yu can't compare them as such, there are dry and sweet and in between of all of the above - so it just depends. Even 1 brand of, say, champagne, will have 2, 3 or many more different types, from Brut, to semi, to sweet, etc. For me, the dryer the better.

Cava used to be the cheap Champagne substitute until a few years ago, didn't it? As someone else mentioned, I always found it too dry and slightly sour. I no longer buy it.

I am so glad Prosecco came along! I love it and as it's usually priced only slightly higher than wine, it is a nice any-time treat. I know my daughter (30) and her friends are into it. It seems to be what they drink when they get together.

I have bought Aldi and Lidl's Prosecco and both are very good. We tend to stock up when they are on offer. I last bought a bottle of Champagne for a 60th birthday present.

I like them all, also Hardy's Chardonnay Pinot Noir in both their Crest and Stamp labels. I wait till it's on offer and buy it for the same price as the popular proseccos, around £6.99 at Tesco or Asda. Nice and dry and a great alternative to champagne.

Oh, thank heavens I'm not alone! I did wonder, after saying upthread how I didn't 'get' fizzy wine, if I was a voice in the wilderness. But it seems not, there are at least 4 of us in this little club on here. Good to meet you Merseymog, cupcake and entropy - bottoms up!

I like all of those four things, and what's more I like Rioja too. Must be me who is the Philistine!

Prosecco is yummy! I've never liked champagne (unless it's Lanson) and liked Cava until I 'discovered' Prosecco. Can't resist a couple of bottles when its on offer at my local Morrisons, just to have ready chilled for when the occasion calls!

It has been said and I agree.
4 very overated things are 1 champagne,2 barbecues, 3 caviare and 4 picnics. Im with cupcake give me Rioja any time.

Can't abide anything fizzy. Give me a good Rioja or Cabernet Sauvignon any day. (maybe every day)

The Co-Op do a very nice Prosecco which is often on offer. I picked one up yesterday for £6.99. I love having a couple of bottles of fizz tucked away, usually in the garage fridge so it's not toooo accessible. Adds a bit of fun to most dull days/occasions/visitors. Not that our visitors are ever dull - in case anyone's reading this.

I'm happy with Cava - specially when you buy it in Spain for about 1 euro! But I once got given a bottle of vintage Bollinger that at the time (about 20 years ago) was selling for about £60 (heaven knows what it would cost now!).
It was pretty delicious...

I'm a bit of philistine in that I don't rate any Fizzy Wine. I far prefer a glass of still white, red or rose depending on what I'm having it with. I will drink fizzy stuff if I'm given it but can honestly I never had any that I truly liked.

Does anyone else think that Fizz is not worth raving about??

Mr P & I are very partial to a drop of fizz, or as he puts it "Would you like a glass of something restorative, darling?" Although I did think it was a little early in the day when he brought me one in bed along with my birthday present at 9am

For the last 2 weeks, Morrisons have had their vintage Cava on offer at £5 (their ordinary is only £4.99) and we could actually taste the difference, a lot smoother.

I'm off to Bideford later and hoping that it is still on offer

On a recent holiday our courier declared "There's not much in life that can't be improved with a glass of Prosseco!" How true!

Aldi's Cremant de Jura is about £7 and is a French sparkling wine though not from the champagne region, and is a good alternative to pricey champers. I think Marks and Tesco do a good Cremant too. Aldi do a nice rose spumante fizz which is about £5 and lovely with a bit of cake for a special afternoon summer tea.

I have 6 bottles of Asda's Canti Prosecco in my Christmas cupboard. NanSue is right, it's really very good

Asda sell a Canti Prosecco for £6. It's really very good, both on its own and for cocktails.

Last Christmas Aldi had a small quantity of Franciacorta which is the best sparkling wine produced in Italy. It was £14.99 a bottle but very good. I've got another bottle tucked away for our anniversary Nobody seems to talk about Asti these days, although we always have a bottle with our Christmas pudding. The Lambrusco we get over here is very different from the one the Italians drink which is a much more serious wine.
