Halogen ovens

I just wondered if anyone had any updates on this thread. I would like to be able to "cook properly" but without using the electric oven. I live by myself.

so pleased that I thought about gransnet, I am almost demented attempting to control my halogen over, last evening, cooked whole chicken, brilliant, but the vegetables, 'don't ask me' complete disaster, good job that I am only cooking for me, otherwise to have dished them up to my sadly late husband, I would probably be wearing the veg. (not really), so tonight I am attempting to cook rice to have with the left over chicken, don't look too good at present, any suggestions!!!!!!! would be most welcome

My neighbour has had a Remoska from LL and she swears by it,she does all her baking in it even down to mince pies at Christmas and when she had a problem with the lid I phoned LL for her and they dispatched a complete new oven for her which arrived 4 days after phone call.Nannyjay if you Google Halogen recipes you will find some that will help you before you spend on a cookery book,thats if you decide to go down that route.good luck on your choice.

This is my first post on here, and I was going to start a thread on Halogen ovens, but have been interested to read the one already here.

I am seriously thinking of buying one of these and have noted all the comments. I live alone, so do you think it is worth buying one for the energy saving? And is there anything or any group of food that can't be cooked in one? And would you recommend the smaller or the larger one for a single person?

These questions may seem a bit stupid, but I don't have money to waste and want to get it right first time, so any advice would be very welcome.

Thank you for the tip about the cookbook, Netgran. I'll certainly buy one of those as it sounds like a fiver well spent, but only if I decide to buy the cooker.

Netgran, thanks for that info, I`ve been looking for a cookbook for the halogen oven, the leaflet provided isn`t specific enough. I still only use mine on holiday, but love it!

I bought mine a month ago from lidl as it was on special offer. First couple of attempts were a disaster!! Chicken done on outside raw inside - lamb cooked within an inch of its life. However - I did persevere and now I wouldn't be without it. I found i needed to adjust temp as you would with recipes for fan assisted. Also- bought a very useful cookbook from whsmiths - Hamlyn all colour cookbook for halogen ovens priced at £4.99. Great recipes and takes the guessing work out of the temp and timing - great cake recipes too.

Recently bought Hal oven and still trying to work out the temp and timing. for example, Fridays chicken meal,although tasty from the various spices was very dry.
Baked a carrot cake this evening, that took longer than the time given. I am feeling a little anxious but plan to keep using it. Need to get it sorted because I will be taking it to Ghana with me because I am hoping to use it mainly for bread making and cakes.
Any suggestions on 'adding' moisture .?

See the reviews of these gadgets on Amazon. Yes, the bulbs do go, and it seems that replacements are available on the web site. It would be most irksome if this happened in the middle of baking something special.

I asked my DH what he thought about these as he knows a lot about energy efficiency. But in fact he didn't have much info about them. Didn't stop the cogs whirring...
Ten minutes later i pointed out that most women not that riveted by talk of the electromagnetic spectrum or the excitation of O-H molecular bonds in fact LOL
But he did say - "if it converts electricity into heat - how is it cheaper?" And my question is - does it work by some kind of halogen light bulb, and if so, do you end up buying expensive replacements?

Yes, every time I get a catalogue, I look at it. But, with two separate meals each time we're at home, it hardly seems sensible...

No, the Remoska seems to be something else. Agree it sounds intriguing and i think I have been there when Lakeland have been demonstrating it. If I had a bigger kitchen, perhaps I would invest.

Is that like that Remoska thingy that "L......d" sell? Always been intrigued by it!

How do they compare in terms of energy then?

I am thinking of buying a halogen oven to try to cut down on fuel bills does anyone have any recommendations ie which is the best make and easiest to use kind regards Mary

I second that Tooth fairy! But mine is in our tourer caravan, which didn`t have an oven when we bought it, I so missed the oven from the previous caravan, so our daughter and her fiance bought us a halogen oven for Christmas 2008, and it was a godsend, and so easy to use! We`ve never used it at home, but it`s had plenty of use on holidays, as it will again this year, even though we`ve now had an oven put in the van, the halogen oven will never be redundant.
