Oh I agree it's his money to do with as he wishes.
I'm just not comfortable with the blackmail aspect. I wish DB hadn't taken the money to promote them, it's not as if he needs another £10 million, but then again I would have preferred our whole England team had shown some principles and refused to take part in the tournament. Every single person that participates whether in the audience or on the pitch is supporting Qatar's world cup. Sporting boycotts are effective, and this would have been huge had many countries joined in.

It was a double bluff.

It seems to be being forgotten that it was his money to do with as he pleased. That would have been true whether he'd shredded it or not.

The point, though, is that right until he 'admitted' that he hadn't shredded it but given it to charity, David Beckham was unmoved, and did nothing in response. He could have stepped in, offered to match the money, agreed to make some sort of statement about human rights in Qatar, or something, but he didn't. Arguably, that would have been giving in to blackmail, but the counter-argument would be that it was an offer of payment to use his influence, and DB is far from averse to that sort of deal. Maybe £10k was too much like small change for him?

Had JL said at the start that he would donate the money whatever happened, the stunt would have been a damp squib. This way, DB (and the other 'stars' who are acting in support of the Qatari regime) has been exposed as a hypocrite, JL has gained publicity for himself, and the money has gone to charity, so I see it as a win all round.

And what about those agreeing shredding £10,000 was a good idea, a wonderful publicity stunt, cheap at the price for the publicity generated...............seems Joe disagrees he calls it 'irresponsible' to shred the money and says he would never do such a thing?
I still wonder which was the lie, the shredding of real money or the later retraction? That was some setup if real money was put into the shredder but fake money came out. The trouble is when you lie can anyone believe anything else you say?

Nothing to do with OP but I liked him on gsb and his consumer programme. I think he has integrity and donating to a charity while laudable would have done nothing to draw attention to beckham’s hypocrisy

I've been watching Jeremy Vine. A guest has just mentioned how much of London is owned by Qatar.

The Shard, Harrods, Olympic Village, former US Embassy Building, One Hyde Park, Chelsea Barracks. 200 million pound home in Regent's Park, Canary Wharf Financial District, Claridges, The Berkley and The Connaught, shareholder in the London Stock Exchange, a stake in Camden Market. Also major shareholders of Sainsburys and Barclay's.

Manchester City is basically owned by a member of. the Royal Family in Abu Dhabi.

Apparently what he really shredded was a cover of the magazine (GQ? Time?) with the photo of DB and the headline about his being a gay icon .

Trying to find the magazine, I've been google imaging 'David Beckham magazine gay icon', and there are so many photos of him with his kit off in provocative poses* - it is no accident that he has that status, and it will have earned him a fortune. It is incredibly hypocritical of him not to stand by his gay fans over this.

* it's tough work, but someone has to do it - I don't mind taking one for the team

To DH’s amazement I just turned the TV on the watch the match. The studio pundits were discussing the one love armband and criticised the timing of the announcement that captains would be yellow carded if they wore it. They then cut to the pitch where two females ( vaguely recognised them, but can’t recall their names). The one one the right hand side of the picture was wearing the arm band (or something that looked very like it) on her left arm.
