Britain officially no longer in a pandemic

On a positive note I really wish our government had organised the vaccines as well as the uk has. Only a few have had it so far and now they are no longer giving astra Zeneca to under 50 s it will be even slower. Many front line workers haven’t had it yet which to my mind is a total disgrace. We are going well with infection rates but that is mainly because it is really hard to get here from overseas. A trickle are coming in, most plane loads have the virus onboard but the hotel quarantine leaves a lot to be desired. Germ factories in some cases, just like the cruise ships.

Just to point out, that in the UK it has been the NHS which has handled and run the highly successful vaccine roll-out
Had it been left to 'our' government, it would have been the usual shambles, with a couple of their 'mates' making milliions of pounds from it!!!

I agree the NHS are the vaccine champions (and all the Volunteers), but I am truly glad our Government - who have made many mistakes - put early orders in for all the millions of vaccines that we are all getting. The cost must have been huge, and other countries have dallied and we didn’t.

Although this horrible situation isn't over, it is a positive step in the right direction. A positive message in all this doom and gloom is uplifting, so thank you to the OP for posting it.

Absolute rubbish! Until the world has Covid under control we’ll all still be part of the pandemic. Look at the extreme measures NZ has to go to to keep the virus out. If everyone believes this and starts ignoring measures to control the virus we will soon be back into it- despite the vaccine ( which not everyone has had)

The latest figures show that half of the population here has been vaccinated and 12 million have had their second doses.

Whether that means we are now officially out of a pandemic status I’m not sure.

The PM’s roadmap timetable seems very sensible and well thought out to me.

Some MPs and others are clamouring for the lockdown to be speeded up but I remember Boris saying that any moves towards freedom would be irreversible, so caution is a wise option.

The situation in places like India serves as a warning, but scientists are working hard to develop a booster vaccine which should hopefully protect us against the variants.

Yes I hope Johnson has finally learnt his lesson in terms of caution.

I am wondering , is it possible ( hope not) that because Johnson had the virus himself he wasn’t all that quick to stop others catching it. It is to be hoped he is not that selfish but sometimes that flits across my mind.

He caught the virus because he didn’t seem to have any understanding of how it was transmitted. Just thought he could fight it with sound bites. Whatever happened to squashed somberos?

Very glad the UK (or Britain) is doing so well, but I think saying it is no longer in a pandemic is rather irresponsible. In Australia we have had less than 30,000 cases and 910 deaths (35 per million population) and I think only 27 active cases now, but we are still being told not to get complacent as we are still in a pandemic and just one person doing the wrong thing can change it all.

The only infections we get now is from returning travellers and occasionally community spread linked to them.

Have just read that a lot of scientists have written to Johnson to urge him to try and get the country back to normal, definitely by June 21st ( government timeline.) No doubt economists are saying the same thing too, for different reasons.

Oh I’m really hoping it changes for all of you in Germany. I do feel we should have approached this in a more humanitarian way and shared the vaccine, but also feel sojj mum evidently the EU has been too cautious. I understand the need to be sure, but this virus is not giving people the tinn m e for this consideration. People take risks every day in operations, so I’m hoping the whole world gets to grips with this, even though the EU seem to want to punish Britain for Brexit, it’s a bit like a kid who wants to move out and live independently.
