Can "anti-Vaxxers&q uot; explain?

I watched the jvt interview this morning, and he skillfully sidestepped the issue of mandatory vaccinations, from what I saw.

I have just asked a very good friend about Catholics eating pork. She is from a very devout family - 3 sisters nuns and eldest brother a priest. She said that’s not the case. However, each to their own. I’m Jewish and have eaten pork but no longer eat it on animal welfare grounds. Pigs are not dirty animals. They are highly sensitive and more intelligent than the most intelligent dog. Their treatment in factory farming is horrific. Having said that, if any religion means less people eating and, thereby no longer contributing to this dreadful cruelty is fine by me.

i think there was some confusion over the pork and catholics.
i think we can all agree that anyone can follow any religious and/ or dietary practice they choose.
however it is certainly not mainstream roman catholic teaching to forbid eating pork.
maybe that poster was some other sort of catholic, or a kind of sub-group, akin to jewish vegetarians, iyswim.

Same here. There's also a clause in the Teachers' Work and Conditions Act that teachers have to be mentally and physically fit.

there is a prominent anti-vaxxer near me. says it;s the govt trying to take us over etc. a highly educated person, but gone down a narrow gully, into stagnant water i'd say.

from being unconcerned about the subject generally, pre covid, i now feel i want to join a pro-vaxxer group.
so i offered to have the MMR in solidarity, but the doc said no point, too old.
also to the person who said downturn in having MMR has not resulted in increased cases, that is not so.
i haven't got the figures to hand, maybe growstuff ? has.
i think it is shocking that certain people are getting money from influencing parents not to inoculate their children with MMR . these fads have led to many serious cases and avoidable suffering of children, and their parents.

No, I haven't any figures to hand and I'm going to be busy for the rest of the evening (earning my crust). However, I do know there have been outbreaks of measles and the UK (maybe just England?) no longer has measle-free status. I'll see if I can find anything tomorrow.

I confess I don't understand the mentality of anti-vaxxers, unless there is a genuine medical reason why somebody can't be vaccinated.

PS. Just realised I'm busy tomorrow working in the morning and then travelling to get my own jab.

Its quite important to think about why that might be though. Why are people embracing conspiracy theories, it's not just covid, it's the conspiracy theories around trump and the stolen election. I think it would be a massive mistake not to ask why this is happening.

Galaxy: Good point. I think the general public expect to be more informed these days. We've / they've had more time twiddling thumbs over the last year - good for the conspiracy seekers & drivers. Also more people worldwide internet access. Where do we go from here?
My DD is watching the data & is hoping to have the vaccine when her baby is more developed. (Only 10 weeks at present)
She is in the vulnerable group, reacts to injections but - like her flu jab in the autumn she will take additional antihistamines before & after injection & has epi-pen if necessary ref: her consultant.

I am rapidly losing patience with both anti vaxxers and conspiracy theorists. We have had the scientists working their socks off to produce and test the vaccines and NHS staff, Army medics and thousands of volunteers working tirelessly and in the case of volunteers unpaid to get the vaccines rolled out. Pity these Doubting Thomases can’t direct their energies into something more worthwhile than spending their time spreading lies and rumours. We have a friend who I no longer want to speak to because he spouts the most utter rubbish about empty ambulances and Covid being a hoax. After the loss of so many lives it makes you despair how people can be so stupid and thoughtless.

'Monkey DNA'??? The vaccines do not contain any animal-derived ingredients. The Oxford/Astra Zeneca uses a virus that usually infects chimpanzees (apes) - not their DNA. It is approved for vegans, even though we are opposed to animal testing:

When I was growing up I remember seeing and knowing people with bandy legs due to Rickets, leg braces due to Polio, profound hearing loss due to measles - I know of several infant deaths due to Measles. There were chest hospitals and sanatoriums where people would go for months due to Diptheria and TB. Mumps in an adult male is something else - I'm sure most of you know all this, but Welbeck mentioned the MMR so I thought I would post my memories of communicable diseases of my 'yoof'.

Have people forgotten about killer diseases now, or diseases that leave people maimed for life? Are these things now confined to the odd episode of Call the Midwife, as if they are a fantasy and weren't a reality?

I doubt any of us have forgotten. I'm in my 50's so not exactly old, but younger generations have no idea what life changing devastation rampant disease brings - consequently without the artefacts of them in constant view ( anyone remember little blue invalid cars?) it must be hard for them to believe that the risks are real.

How do we convince people that the reason they don't see these things now is due to vaccines, sanitation, decent housing, hygiene and diet.

But mostly vaccines.

By not saying you've lost patience with them?
Open dialogue and not patronising them?
Not posting "clever" things thought up by someone else on facebook about them?

My baby brother aged 6 months caught measles from me, he was seriously ill. Also my friend's sister caught polio, she spent her life in leg braces.
How different life would be for so many now, if we didn't have vaccines.

Facebook and other social media have a lot to answer for spreading fake news about the vaccine. I heard a young man being interviewed, who said, I don't believe in the Covid. How do you convince them they are putting their own lives, those of their families and medical staff who have to treat them at risk, by denying the existence of Covid19?

The only person I know who is unsure/delaying their vaccine is needle-phobic. I said that the needle is so tiny, I didn't even feel it - but it's the fear of any needle, unfortunately.

If they end up in hospital, they will have to get over their phobia or perhaps die. Not really any choice in my opinion. I have to inject myself, I don't like it, (the needle isn't fine) but it's either that or become very unwell.

Hetty, would they consider something like hypnosis to help them?

Marydoll, personally, I think they should be darted, like a wild animal! They are going to 'Wait and see' - very dangerous, I believe.

Covid has mostly affected the elderly in the population worst. Can you just imagine the panic if it were babies, toddlers and school age children who were dying in such large numbers?

I’d bet there would be much less vaccination hesitancy in that scenario.
