Vaccinations from next week

We had our flu jabs at the local day care centre, queued outside, went in through front door and out at the side, perfectly safe, socially distanced, nobody going in until called. I'm sure that it will be the same sort of system for the new vaccine. My DH is 82 and diabetic, so will be one of the first, along with his DD who is a consultant in intensive care in a fairly deprived area of East London. I'm younger so will have to wait longer, but will definitely be having it.

Holograms can be faked, I believe.

We are all in need of hope right now. It’s been a tough year for many. I feel quite emotional at the news this morning to be honest.

Growstuff before we get to Priority 5 there should be a lot less Covid 19 about provided the rest of us get the jab. I remember as a child we didn’t seem to have much choice. We just went. I was terrified of the BCG jab but even that wasn’t as bad as I imagined.

What would have happened if our predecessors had all refused the many vaccines that have eradicated numerous diseases of our not too distant past? I agree the vaccine development and authorisation has been completed in a shorter timeframe that is normal but we are not living in normal times. This is something to be celebrated and welcomed but still we must not become complacent as the whole vaccination process from injection 1 to immunity is around 1 month so we still need to take care. I fully intend to take advantage of the vaccination as soon as I am allowed to. Not forgetting in all of this that we in the UK will get this free whilst the cost to the NHS varies between £3 & £25 depending on which vaccine is used and that us something else to be thankful for. My understanding is that the vaccine in the news today is at the upper end of the process range.

I’m disappointed to read so much negativity. Seems the government can never get it right. They have always said that the vaccines will be a part of the armour against Covid - alongside the basic hygiene rules and testing. No one thing is the answer. I’ll def be in the queue for mine, as will my husband. We also volunteered for testing vaccines but weren’t chosen! People who choose not to have it not only put themselves at risk but also others that they may pass it on to and medical staff who may have to treat them.

I hope they tell us we need to prove that we’ve had the vaccination before we can go travelling, I’ve spoken to several people who will refuse it , they give false names and addresses in cafes, refuse to wear masks and think it’s all a Government plot to keep us in our place.

I hope so too, and make it something with a hologram or something they can't just copy it from the Internet, and that it can be scanned at airports, theatres, cinemas, cafes, etc.
I'm heartily sick of these people who don't give a damn and think the rest of us are fools for sticking to the rules.

Elegant that is not how I feel at all. I have no doubts about the nurses, apart from some are better at administering inoculations than others, and I am sure it will be organised in a competent and professionally manner. I just don’t fancy the long drive to the centre and queue inside albeit at proper distancing. There is one being set up at Ashton Gate Stadium, the home of Bristol City FC and that will be indoors. As I don’t live in Bristol I hope we won’t all be sent there from the surrounding areas. Some village halls are being requisitioned by the NHS. If it’s in my village I would rather go there.

Refusing vaccine, ignoring all the guidance, saying it’s all a Government scam - it’s tantamount to manslaughter! Serial killer level.
Sorry to be so aggressive but it makes me very angry. So insulting and hurtful to those who have already lost loved ones.
It’s a bit Big Brother but maybe the vaccine should be mandatory?

I do hope restaurants, hotels, airlines, universities, etc. etc. will ask for proof of vaccination before they allow anyone in to their establishments. Your choice, no vaccination, stay home.

There wouldn't be any point until it's been established whether the vaccine prevents transmission.

Hmm! Well, there are 10 million doses on the way. That means 5 million people can be vaccinated.

There are 410,000 residents in care homes and more staff than that (not sure how many). Approximately one million people will be first priority.

Next, there are 3,200,000 over 80s. Some of them will be in care homes, so there's an overlap and will already have been vaccinated.

There will be an estimated million vaccines available for the people in the next priority group (over 75), of whom there are 2,200,000. By the time we're on to Priority 3, we're going to need more doses.

I'm in Priority 5 and not expecting to be vaccinated until next summer at the earliest.

Esspee you are perfectly entitled to your view about not having the vaccine but you will really have to hope that most people don’t feel the same way or we will still be in the same situation this time next year.

To be fair, we wouldn't be in the same situation.

It has not been established that the vaccine stops people from catching Covid or, crucially, stops transmission.

The only people who will benefit are those who have been vaccinated. Hopefully, it will stop some of them from dying. If they choose not to be vaccinated, their risk will be the same at is now, but it won't affect anybody else's risk.

Takes on average ten years for a new vaccine to be made safe.. No way will I have this

Piers Morgan was getting very excited at the thought of the pair of them meeting up to have the jab live on the show next week.

It really is lose/lose though

If they have it some will accuse them of jumping the queue

If they don't some will accuse them of not wanting to have the vaccine and are using the public as guinea pigs

And then there are some who will say that there is no proof that they would actually be having the vaccine even if they saw it on TV

I will definitely have the vaccine when it’s offered. We can’t keep living like this - lockdown, tier system, lockdown, tier system ad infinitum.
Some social media has a lot to answer for with regard to false information and sheer mischief making which could well cost unnecessary lives.

Matt Hancock was on TV this morning and said he would willingly take the injection on air to public view. He did add he'd be accused of queue because of age jumping. No win guy for sure. I'm keen as mustard to give it a go. If certificates of proof are required for travel/anything, I bet there'll be a huge black market surge in fake ones.

If Johnson and Hancock were first in line the chorus of "one rule for them etc" would be deafening.

Not everyone has to be vaccinated to stop the virus from spreading - just enough for it to struggle to find hosts and make the R number dip so low that it has nowhere to go.

So we can step forward for our jab when our turn comes and ignore the nutters.

My husband has COPD,is diabetic & is in remission from prostate cancer &we are just hoping & praying that he will get the vaccine sooner rather than later but there are limited supplies & lots of ‘clinically vulnerable’ people with the same hopes.He is worried sick about catching Covid & life is very stressful at the moment.

These are the medical conditions which are currently mentioned as high risk:

solid organ transplant recipients
haematological cancers
certain neurological conditions
chronic kidney disease
immunosuppression
dementia
stroke
poorly controlled diabetes
chronic pulmonary disease
obesity (BMI greater than 40)
malignancy
liver disease

The list is under review, as is ethnicity. Currently, people under 65 with any of the above conditions are sixth on the list of priorities.

diami There would be uproar if Matt Hancock jumped the queue and had the vaccine when he's not eligible.

My friend's daughter has recently died of Covid. She went into hospital for a minor op, and tested negative before she went in, as per procedure. While in hospital she developed Covid and died just before the 2nd lockdown. She was in her early 50s.

I will be having the vaccine.

It has been suggested that politicians are given the vaccine first to instill confidence. Imagine the outcry, they would be accused of self-interest and queue jumping at the very least. The Queen and David Attenborough must lead the way.

I agree with you. I sincerely hope that it's not available privately to anyone.
