I lived in Hong Kong for three years after their SARS epidemic. It was commonplace to wear a mask, but it was to protect others from the wearer, not the wearer from infection. However, only Asians ever wore them. I never saw a Westerner wear one. Nowadays, though, my fb feed is full of pics Western friends in Hong Kong wearing all sorts of masks, some home made, some hospital style and some workshop dust masks. Not sure if they will help tbh.
