She and her family didn't stay inside. She was photographed walking about outside. What part of stay at home does she not understand? We'd all like to pile into cars and go for a nice weekend away but we don't because we're doing whatever we can to help in this situation.
As a figurehead preaching to us about staying at home she's lost all credibility.

Yes, technically I agree that driving from your own house in your own car to your own second house isn't going to spread the virus.

But consider this: at the moment the roads are relatively empty which must be resulting in a huge cut in traffic accidents, major incidents that put enormous strain on the NHS. We need to keep traffic to the minimum for this very reason, if nothing else.

Catherine Calderwood is an obstetrician. We could do with a more relevant chief medical officer. One who doesn't appear on our TV screens telling us to stay at home then ignoring this herself.

Of course she shouldn't have done it, it was totally the wrong thing to do.

However, do we know the full circumstances? She drove there, stayed overnight, checked everything was secure and came home, she wasn't escaping to a holiday home. Sacking her at this time and conducting a witch hunt wouldn't achieve anything, when her skills are needed the most. Who would replace her? Anyone taking over would need to hit the ground running.

Having watched Chris Whitty and Catherine Calderwood giving Coronavirus briefings, I know who I would want as Chief medical Officer and it wouldn't be Chris Whitty.
Catherine Calderwood is very articulate and dedicated, she has been working seven days a week, without a break.
What about her mental health, perhaps she just needed to get away from it all. I can't imagine the stress she must be under.
If she went in her own car, with her own family and maintained social distancing, how do we know she put anyone at risk?
Can everyone posting on here say that they have followed the rules to the letter of the law?

Not really the point though Baggs about the risk to others. We could all go for jaunts in the car, just out for a ride, but that is not essential travel, which is all we should be doing.

I too was talking to a friend in Spain Re shopping. Not only do they have to show receipts but the supermarket has to be the nearest one to their home address.

But I still question the actual risk to others.

Speaking online to a friend in lockdown in Spain I heard that motorists are stopped by police and have to provide proof that they were food or medication shopping. They have to show shop receipts as evidence. We might have to be as strict if current lock down rules aren't adhered to.

We are asked not to make unnecessary journeys - obviously fewer cars on the road will mean fewer accidents and breakdowns and hence demands on the emergency services and hospitals. Not rocket science. Selfish behaviour ought to be challenged and, if needed, punished and shamed. EV is right to say that some people think the rules don’t apply to them.

Foghornleghorn I agree, I think what’s happening maybe is some neighbours as with mine I,e yesterday mine went out four times, two dog walks, one car ride, one bike ride how I noticed you ask is I’m stuck in and can hear his door go. So people are thinking well I’m adhering to this and some aren’t so they think I will do it too.

I must admit to be in lockdown in a lovely big house must be different to how some people are living having lots of rooms to go to for some privacy and space, My place is very small. Out exercising yesterday some of the huge houses I wonder what it must be like to live in one.

The arrogance of these people is sickening.

Every member of the Royal Family also escaped to their holiday/second homes, as did Carrie, Boris' girlfriend, who is at Chequers. There's always one rule for the rich, who not only do things like that but advertise it too. If I was ever stopped by the police, I would tell them to go and arrest them first! It's no wonder some people aren't taking these guidance rules seriously.

I agree she shouldn't have done this BUT is driving from your own home in your own car to your own holiday home "spreading the virus" if you have observed social distancing throughout?

Hearing about covidiots like this make me so cross! So many of us are doing as we have been told and staying under house arrest but these restrictions will go on for longer if other people are out spreading the virus.

I'm not in a vulnerable group, being under 70 with no significant health problems but I have still only left my house once to get some food. I don't even go out for a daily walk as I struggle to walk far due to arthritis in both knees. I do this despite living alone and really missing some company because I don't want to be ill. But everyone needs to do the same!

While we are in this state of national emergency, there should be stricter penalties for those people who ignore the rules. Otherwise we could be put under even harsher restrictions as in some other countries where exercise outside is totally forbidden.

She should at the very least be sacked.

I have to agree with you Jane10. So it was necessary for her to drive there with her family to 'check on the security'? Of course she should be charged and fined, made an example of. How dare she behave as if she's exempt from all the advice that she has been giving to others?
