It’s taken weeks but I’ve finally found the culprit!

I have been suffering with an intensely itchy scalp, so bad , I had two nights with virtually zero sleep.
I have changed my hair products, filled in a food diary and still couldn’t pinpoint what it is.

I have had 3 days of itching and even showered at 3.00am for some relief.

Then it dawned on me, cinnamon, was in the meals we ate on Wednesday and Thursday, I make my own curry pastes and use cinnamon bark.

I made a little paste of cinnamon and water dabbed it on my wrist and it blistered immediately.

Apparently a lot of hair products contain cinnamon extract, I am very relieved but slightly peeved.

How interesting. I would never have thought of cinnamon!

Interesting. I just wonder if the reason some people find cinnamon tastes revolting. I avoid it at all costs in anything and will substitute allspice as an alternative In general I will eat most things

I know of someone who has a stomach ulcer. The cause the specialist thinks, is the cinnamon
that was being sprinkled on their porridge.
It must be some kind of irritant.
Personally I don’t like the taste.

Thank you for posting this Sago
it's very useful to know. I'm sure it will be helpful to many people including those who read GN but perhaps never post.

I love cinnamon.
Has anyone who has been to Canada , had their roadside snack called Beaver Tails ? It’s a fried pastry sprinkled over with cinnamon powder and sugar. Absolutely mouth watering 😋
The Indians use cinnamon all the time in their curries. I can’t say I know any Indians who suffer from stomach ulcers.

I was surprised tbh that cinnamon could cause ulcers.
Maybe they should put as a warning on the jar if that’s the case.

Likewise my mouth comes out in blisters if I have cinnamon and chillies.

Poor you .
What a nuisance.
I love cinnamon .
The one thing that can make me really ill is coffee .
I had a cup a couple of days ago and I'm suffering from appalling reflux .
It also has a laxative effect on me.

I loath cinnamon too. Waitrose do a lovely mixed spice without cinnamon.

Turmeric is a useful spice, health wise as it is anti-inflammatory.
I tried it once to help with arthritis.
It caused crippling stomach pains.
So unfortunately I can't use it.

And yet we are told you can sprinkle cinnamon on certain foods rather than sugar. So thank you for the warning Sago and glad you found the source of the problem. I never realised it was in shampooing either. It just goes to show it pays to read the ingredients and not only parabens to look out for.

I guess this is why there are warnings about alternative remedies if you are on medication as they can react.

We are all different. Cinnamon is not usually a problem, lots of people love it. Oregano seems to be one that some people strongly dislike but not necessarily allergic to. There is something I really dislike but haven't yet identified. I know it's in Thai food and wondered if it was lemongrass. As I said, we are all different!

Thanks Spidergran.
Unfortunately my nearest Waitrose is on Anglesey over an hour away. It’s only a small one and not nearly as well stocked as the one in Chester was

Stansgran Sun 18-Oct-26 14:38:58

I’m allergic to cinnamon and feel silly when asked in hospitals etc if I have any allergies. Glad isn’t the right word but it helps to see I’m not alone in this.
