Just came back from Brittany where the Diesel is the same number price as here - but in Euros. We paid E 2.00 there per litre and here in this part of Buckinghamshire it’s £2.00 a litre. So that makes Diesel slightly cheaper in France.

Total offered a price limit on Diesel and promptly sold out so their pumps were dry, a nice reminder of what price fixing does.

We’re in a coastal town in the south west Here prices currently vary between £1.78 (Sainsbury) and £1.76 (the rest of the supermarkets) a litre for petrol. Thankfully our hybrid car is very economical for local trips.

Interesting,
We have a new plug in hybrid. We charge at home using a domestic plug. When charged to 90% the range is 63 miles (101km)
Although hybrid we don’t use any petrol unless we are travelling on holiday.
63 miles is enough for a local day out and shopping.

I've just reverted the app to 95 octane and in those couple of minutes, it's gone down to €2.239.

In Germany the price of petrol fluctuates continuously. Because petrol stations changed the prices several times a day a law was recently introduced limiting it to decreases only until 12 noon and at 12 they are allowed one increase.

It's half past one here now and according to the petrol price app on my phone, 95 octane is €2.279 a litre at the moment. Last week a fuel subsidy was introduced which means that prices are about 20 cents lower than they were last month.

Diesel is €2.319, although traditionally diesel was always 5-10 cents cheaper than petrol.

I live in Eindhoven in The Netherlands and we pay €2.39 which is equivalent to £2.02, with today's conversion.

It is disgraceful that, having encouraged everyone to buy diesel cars, they are now somehow the villain with an extra 5p tax.

I travelled to Wolverhampton, Shrewsbury and Conwy in the last month and found that Cambs seems to be cheaper than all those. I got petrol at £170.7, up 3p from my last fill 2 weeks ago. Diesel cheapest though is £198.9.

General news is that it is going to hold and slowly go down a little, but you can bet it will not sink fast - businesses will take the opportunity to make a little more on the forecourt.

Thanks for the link. Actually provides facts rather than opinion.

Not a car driver but l was surprised by the UK position in this RAC table. I thought the UK would be in the top six.

£171.9 petrol and £196.9 diesel here in South Yorkshire. When I filled up on 28th it petrol was £169.9.

NorthowramGran Tue 06-Oct-26 16:04:13

We paid €2.12 a litre in Portugal on Saturday, on Sunday we paid £1.69 in our local (uk) supermarket.

Just noticed €2.19 unleaded in south east France. That’s about £1.86. Back in June I noticed it was about 10p a litre more in France than in UK. But the wine is considerably cheaper 🤣

Neveellatheo3 Tue 06-Oct-26 14:22:11

£2.05 ltr diesel & £179.9 ltr petrol however per gallon it is still cheaper than beer!

It was 1.34-1.49 euros in Malta a couple of weeks ago when I was there

mokryna Mon 05-Oct-26 15:22:10

Google says €2.17 is equal to approximately £1.84 in British Pound Sterling

mokryna Mon 05-Oct-26 15:19:12

The pound sterling is strong against the euro at the moment. Last week I bought SP 95 paid 2.15 at an Esso garage in Versailles. It was expensive but today it is 2.17 euros.

This is a very good explainer from the BBC:

Why has UK diesel price hit an all time high?

www.youtube.com/watch?v=da46atkFNJM

The short answer is Putin and Trump but note the segment from the farmer concerned about fuel theft (which may have some relevance in the context of recent arrests at RAF Fairford).
