My daughter-in-law had a hybrid - an Audi which she liked a lot.
We have looked at those - but think we want an electric.
If there's no electricity we will just have to stay put!

Can't think where we might have to go that's not possible via public transport/taxi.

Yes Tilly we bought this diesel specifically because it was "better for the environment". We bought it in 2013 and was virtually new. It's been well maintained but our next one will be electric.

I'd recommend a hybrid. At least if the electricity is cut off or you need to go on a long journey, there is fuel in the tank to keep the car going.
So far it seems to be economical.

Ah, thanks.

It is still strange though.

Nothing else we buy is charged at a portion of a penny.

Yes it is. Domestic energy and standing charges.

Wholesale gas, electricity, and oil are traded on wholesale markets down to multiple decimal places per unit.

The same is applied when selling the energy to customers.

No need to ask.

RAC publish a comparison list.

Yes.

We're nowhere near the most expensive, unless you have to use a motorway service station.

JenniRen Mon 05-Oct-26 10:31:17

175.4p for petrol and 200.6p for diesel.

8p per litre off if you shop and fill up with fuel at Tesco!

Nothing else we buy is charged at a portion of a penny. Why is that? If it's psychological marketing then it doesn't work, the consumer is not stupid.

Under Gordon Brown in 2001 diesel cars were encouraged and fuel duty on diesel lowered.
The government then made a U turn as their research showed diesel let off more harmful emissions than petrol.

However, the refining process for diesel is a lot kinder to the environment than that of petrol.
Diesel cars overall consume less fuel and last longer than petrol models.
None of this is taken in to account.

£2.03 at the local garage for diesel 🙀

I'll be driving on the M6 later today and dread to think what the service stations charge.

MawsRosie Sat 03-Oct-26 09:19:22

Either way, it’s not going to make sense to pop over to mainland Europe to fill up!

TillyTrotter Sat 03-Oct-26 08:46:39

We used to be encouraged to drive on diesel in the late 80’s but it’s all change now isn’t it?

I wasn't being snippy. Just so you know, Tilly

I said a joke, I was indirectly poking fun at my own confusion while actually kindly answering the question despite splitting my comments.

South Wales

Unleaded £1.79
Diesel £1.99

Some snippy comments here in the absence of kindly pointing out an inadvertent error.
It’s a wonder anyone starts a thread !!
I think it’s shot up in price per litre but don’t know it compares with , say, France or Spain.

nanna8 Sat 03-Oct-26 08:26:32

Diesel is About 260 cents a litre here - about £1. 38 Unleaded petrol is 230 cents a litre , a bit cheaper, about £1.21. It used to be under $2 a litre always until Donald’s shenanigans.
