They had this topic as a phone in on our local radio and there were some fascinating answers. Thought I might try it here, so

Oh yes castor oil 🤢- mum would close my nostrils with one hand and spoon the castor oil into my mouth with the other - love you mum 💕

Sugar in blue bags! And bacon being sliced for you at the old grocer’s shop.
Also, re younger siblings, big tins of National Dried Milk, not to mention cod liver oil 🤮, but also the bottles of ‘orange juice’ with blue tops. 😋

Coalman delivering sacks of coal of his horse and cart along the alleyway, nd folk moving their washing from the lines strung across the alley, so it didnt get mucky.

Quite a few of these! Plus a gent coming round on his bike which featured a knife sharpener, also on a bike the French gentleman with strings of onions.

I remember Radiograms
I was the youngest of 9 children . One of my older brothers , who was in the merchant navy, bought this for my parents. It was encased in a teak cabinet - it was a piece of furniture in itself.

The man lighting gas lamps in the street. Triangular bags for sweet ration.

Milk bottles delivered to the front door and frozen because it was so cold.
Playing snobs - remember that game with the coloured mini cubes?
French skipping.
Pre toaster days holding break in front of the coal fire on a long fork.
Chilblains.

The Dispel and Airwick bottles of liquid with a wick you pulled up. The bomb damage in Bath. Not having a fridge. Using a mangle. Rushing to see the steamroller go past.

When the roads had hardly any traffic on them
Playing doublers against the wall
Staying out playing until the street lights came on
Horse delivered milk for me too and the deliveries with shovel up the poo for their roses
When the Co-op sold loose butter, shaped by butterpats/paddles and wrapped in greaseproof paper
When you got money back on old fizzy drink bottles
Lucky Bags!

Aldom

I remember the drone of bombers during WW2 and the anxiety of the grown-ups as they watched the planes.
I remember pikelets being toasted over the fire on a long toasting fork whilst the Ink Spots were singing on the wireless.
I remember seeing my father for the first time when he returned from the war in the spring of 1945.
I remember the air raid shelter opposite our house and I remember the day it was knocked down when the war was over.

We had gramophone records of the Inkspots, they were very heavy.
I remember listening to ITMA on the radio.
My Aunt going out on dates with 'Yanks'
Powdered egg.
I too met my Dad for the first time in 1945.

Ditto to bomb damage. I remember seeing it everywhere (S London) in the 50s - and in summer, rose bay willow herb growing all over it.

The rag and bone man coming round the streets calling out "rags and bones."
A jar wrapped in yellow cellophane containing a powder that you added to water to make a fizzy drink. I think it was called Koolooze? (sp). Way before Cremola Foam.

Witzend Thu 10-Sept-26 12:10:38

The milkman coming with a horse. I must have been very small, though, since we moved from that area when I was 6.
Dds thought it utterly hilarious when I told them!
