Bacon slicing machines in grocers shops. You could specify what thickness you wanted it. Loose biscuits in tins, weighed out into paper bags.

I used to hate those embossing machines because you paid like a penny for 3 letters and the limit was 9 letters. My name is 10 letters so my mother used to print out the shortened version which I never liked. I always used to loose the little printed strip.

I remember on the seaside pier a 'What the butler saw' wind up machine lol how tame compared to what's on offer now, a different world, a better one I think.

I remember a pier penny-in-the-slot “amusement” called The Condemned Cell, which showed scenes of a condemned man culminating in his hanging. Absolutely horrific from today’s perspective, yet I, the least violent of children, watched it eagerly when I was about six or seven. This was in the 1940s.

Poor Kittycat it wasn't fair.

There were ashtrays everywhere. Between the cinema seats and on the back of bus seats.
Come to think of it there was a lighter in our car.

I worked in the village shop from 14-16 and loved, loved , loved using the bacon slicer. “Number 4 please” was most common.
Almost as much fun as the cheese wire, trying to cut exactly 8 oz. Easy on a block of mild cheese, not so much on a circle of strong cheddar.
