A thread for people who have been on GN a long time

I was sorting a few papers out yesterday and a writing pad sheet fluttered to the floor and on it it said just ‘December 2013’
and underneath that was a list of names, that I soon realised were GN posters. It was probably not long after I had joined GN and maybe me trying to remember names but I thought some old timers may be interested to have a look and see who they recognise,
It might set some memories off

I wonder if anyone remembers Nellymoser?

She died a year or two back, suffered from Alzheimer’s.

I remember a gentleman poster who sadly died, Feetlebaum, I enjoyed reading his posts, also Rufus from Australia, he had a wicked sense of humour.
I've had a name change since joining. I was hildajennij, and was happy to find another, HildaW. I never managed to attend meet ups but I did go to an Edinburgh one with Elegran, Teagan, Baubles and Baggs.
I've been here a long time but don't post very much. I read a lot though.

Lemongrass I mentioned, I think reading up thread I should have typed Lemongrove.

I can’t remember exactly the year I joined but have been her quite a long time and remember about three quarters of the names. I’ve PM’d people in the past and they me but I’ve never actually met up with anyone .

I wonder if anyone remembers Nellymoser?

Yes I do. Also AlisonMA (think that was her name?) She had family who were ballet dancers.

Thank you for this trip down memory lane Bluebell.

I've been on GN a long time now, pretty much since its inception, MN, at the time, doing its best to offload its oldies in suggesting that perhaps those of a certain age might like to decamp to a place more suitable. I actually wasn't that old at the time, just the wrong side of 55 but a grandchild was on the cards so over I ventured. I remember pretty much all on that list of names, of course some are still very present.

There were standout, some might say Marmite posters, Jingle and Greatnan, both imo could be interesting, funny and at times a bit scary. I was sorry when they both died, particularly Greatnan who had a whole new life in NZ lined up before her fatal accident in France. I think they both brought a strong personality and opinions to the various forums. Also sorry to lose Phoenix again a one off and Ana who started life as Anagram, sorry to hear that she had died. Lemongrass was another poster I liked, and I think she disappeared because she'd had enough.

A couple of the older members who have disappeared who I also fear may have died. PRINTMISS and Bijou, the latter had a 100th birthday, quite something and I can't remember who started a thread to celebrate that where we all sent our best wishes, not so long ago, but haven't heard anything from her since. Glad to see AnnieBach is still occasionally posting and I hope Anodomini who was a friend of Greatnan is still with us, I haven't seen her posting lately.

There were a couple of male posters, who I found really funny, I'm not sure whether it was intentional on their part or not Grandad something or other who saw misandry around every corner and was forever admonishing posters who he felt weren't supportive enough of their menfolk. He also single handedly kept the country on its feet via his haulage business during the time of Covid, or at least that's what he told us grin He was quite hilarious at times with menacing undertones of any post he disapproved of prone to remark "I've just shown that to my colleagues and they're pretty shocked" was a line he liked to spin. From quite a long time ago, another male poster Frank and his dog "Andy" a giver of unsolicited advice regarding mortgages, Frank that is not Andy. Quite the expert hmm Wobblybits who I think pissed a few off with suggestive double entendres. Anyone remember "the men"

Of course many of us are still missing Allira and always will. I first encountered her when she pm'd me, apropos of some caustic comment I was on the receiving end of, that was pre Callistemon when she posted under the name of Jalima. During the course of our communications we found that she once lived in the town I was then living in and she often joked about the local swimming pool, which permanently had the "l" hanging off the end of the "pool" sign leaving a nasty vision of brown floaters shock she always had her tongue placed firmly in her cheek, it was that sense of humour and a very nice nature to go with it that I'm sure so many of us miss.

I'm wondering where Sarah54 is she was a prolific poster on the book thread and sadly she hasn't posted there for quite a while.

@Henetha I recognise your name as I always wonder if it is from Welsh . I’ve no idea why .

I remember Mamies great thread on low carb eating.

Goodness, I had forgotten that! It did work for us, but we do have small amounts of carbs now we are in our seventies.

AGAA4 Sun 12-Jul-26 15:14:42

I've been on GN for about 8 years and I know some of those names mentioned. Lemongrove was one I remember and don't think she posts now. There are quite a few missing that were here back then.

Fallingstar Sun 12-Jul-26 14:53:16

Is good to know that Gransnet is such a long lasting community, sounds like it had a heyday though and as a Johnny come lately I worry I missed the glory days. 🙄

*Oh dear, my contributions at that time were so boring, I'm not memorable*

Neither am I boheminan and I haven’t the excuse of a name change!😂

Me too, bohiminan and J52! What about Marydoll and paddyanne?

Grannybags Sun 12-Jul-26 14:31:19

I was around then and remember most of the names.

I was more of a lurker after jingles had a go at me for something!!

JamesandJon33 Sun 12-Jul-26 13:59:16

I remember most I think. Jingles answered my first post with f**k, which took me back rather, so I was always rather wary of her.

Greyduster Sun 12-Jul-26 13:59:13

She was certainly a very able photographer, Merlot. Gave me a lot of good advice, both about cameras and using them.

henetha Sun 12-Jul-26 13:52:50

Oh ! Gosh...... thanks grin

I still miss Big Louis and her forthrightness.

She’s still here - look for a friendly feline 🐱

Mmc123uk Sun 12-Jul-26 13:47:58

What a lovely thread for a relative newbie like myself... shows its a real community not just an online "group". Here's to many more 👏🫶!!

B9exchange Sun 12-Jul-26 13:42:24

I remember Monica and AnnieBach, both still around I think?

kittylester Sun 12-Jul-26 13:37:40

I saw ga posting the other day.

merlotgran Sun 12-Jul-26 13:35:43

I’m sorry to hear about Nanaandgrampy. Wasn’t she the lady who used to post wildlife photos in soops kitchen or have I got that wrong?

I remember being on the same wavelength as janerowena where gardening was concerned. I missed her when she left.

Is grannyactivist still around? I was thinking of her the other day when it was on the news that Prince Harry would be visiting Scotty’s Little Soldiers.
I think her daughter, who had lost her husband in Afghanistan, was a founder.

henetha Sun 12-Jul-26 12:41:15

I've been on GN for ages. Years. I wish I could remember how many. I like it very much.
And I have never changed my user name. I mostly keep a fairly low profile.
