Why do people lie online are they living a fantasy or winding us up?

Just that really,

I don’t understand why people come online with a story with more holes than a sieve.

Do posters not realise they have left a trail?

When I joined Gransnet I think I read some advice about how to protect your identity and that of grandchildren. It suggested changing some details of ages, gender of grandchildren if asking for advice. I wonder if some people try to do that and then get mixed up?

I think confusing a husband for a wife is a big mix up.

I can endorse Maws post - not just TMs with sexual fantasies, but also extremely sad and distressed callers who rang Branches throughout the country with the same tale - basically a pack of lies!

Mental health issues, or just after 5 minutes of fame?

Or the workman could be joining in the threesome( or foursome) all wearing blue knickers 🤣🤣🤣

Sorry but this brings back memories of Sergeant Wilson in Dad's Army going from door to door about the parachute knickers.

It reminds me of Carry On Camping, when Charles Hawtry ends up sharing a tent with June Whitfield and Terry... someone or other.

Scott.
That's the fellow.

When my D was young she had two friends who lived fantasy lives.
They told her the most fantastic stories about their “doings”.
I helped her negotiate in her dealing with them and we worked out what could be true and what was obviously not.
We had tales of pregnancy, abortions, lost jobs etc.
She dropped one completely and stayed on chatting terms with the other as I knew her parents.
My D learnt to believe only what you can prove for yourself and that others lives are not all drama and excitement or told to either shock or to boost ego.

Just to say that a person may have a husband, divorce him, then marry a wife.
One of my friends from Toddlers' Club did that.

MissAdventure Tue 30-Jun-26 11:29:08

That's a good point.
I hadn't thought of it.

eddiecat78 Tue 30-Jun-26 11:59:46

Please ladies - we must be accurate - the knickers were white not blue.

That's really not the point of the knickers thread, though grin

I was embarrassed by a singing colleague promoting our tour publicising it by dreaming up part of my and his bio. Fantastical events. Photos of him with star tenors turned into close associations when it was just taken after a concert, as many others did.

Whilst it’s natural to make the best of one’s career, the outright lies were mind boggling and backfired on him.

Oh, don't mind me.
I'm making it up as i go along!! grin
My memory isn't so good.

Do any of you remember one of our male posters (I think we scared him off)

He started a thread asking why were women not aware of the wide range of hosiery available to women.

He particularly wanted to know about stockings and suspenders and why they were no longer in vogue.

I couldn’t believe how many posters engaged with him on this!

I eventually reported it after warnings and it was pulled.

MissAdventure Tue 30-Jun-26 13:20:36

I bet it was pulled.... 🤭

MissAdventure Tue 30-Jun-26 13:21:46

Seriously, yes, i remember.
He said his wife and most of her friends wore stockings.

Maremia Tue 30-Jun-26 13:24:44

It's just that a question was raised about the veracity of someone having a husband and a wife.
It can be done, consecutively.

I think you are being a little pedantic.

It’s just on the unlikely side that you would have a husband then a wife in the space of 18months!

Yes possible I know but unlikely.

The OP said she/he and her husband had parted company, no mention of the wife.

Could somebody please message me and tell me what I have missed? Not been online for a couple of days.

Alie2Oxon Tue 30-Jun-26 13:49:38

I try to always tell the truth, even if it's boring - but not always all of it.

I take it out by writing fantasy tales... I'm sure my characters are much more interesting!

JamesandJon33 Tue 30-Jun-26 13:51:24

I’ve missed all that. I’m really annoyed with myself 🩲🩲🩲

Alie2Oxon Tue 30-Jun-26 13:51:27

I don't think I would like to try and give a different image, it seems very hypocritical...

alita Tue 30-Jun-26 14:05:08

You get some scenarios on Reddit asking for advice that just cannot be real, they seem to get the most responses!

Maremia Tue 30-Jun-26 14:15:12

Am I not allowed to be pedantic, if I so chose?
This seems to be a 'fun' Thread.
The scenario is actually possible, but as you say not probable.
We are both correct.
I shall not get my white/ blue or black knickers in a twist. 😃

I belonged to a sewing forum where one of the younger members made perfectly normal sewing related posts but also reported on her chaotic love life and job as a police officer. These were generally humorous and I think we all knew they were exaggerated for comic effects. We were fond of her and felt protective towards her.
Alarm bells rang though when she claimed to have been head hunted by the FBI!
Shortly after she posted a photo of a very glamorous blonde claiming it to be her and it wasn't. That's when she was banned from the forum. I think we all felt duped and left wondering if any of it was true

Greciangirl Tue 30-Jun-26 16:17:51

I don’t see the point of this thread either.
