I’ve just seen a picture of the King Sweltering in a suit and tie yesterday. Surely, in this day and age nobody would object to him at least taking his jacket off.
William is always a lot more informal.

I promise you I’m not making it up! There are plenty of articles online about it, here’s the AI summary:

‘Monty Don is widely considered a style icon, specifically within the realm of practical, utilitarian, and "shabby bohemian" menswear. His signature look—built around classic workwear and traditional country attire—has influenced modern fashion trends and spawned widespread admiration for his distinct aesthetic.’

I agree with that. I think he's lovely. Also I like his mode of dress

You do know that Monty Don is widely considered as a style icon? He’s a cool dresser, and of course, what he wears keeps him cool too. There’s nothing wrong with a rumpled linen jacket at all. It wouldn’t look right on the King though, because he’s short and dapper, not tall and rangy.

A photo of Monty, taken by me at Chelsea a couple of years ago.
I love the spotty braces!

A peasant's smock with string belt, beanie hat, clogs and straw in the teeth would be appropriate for a gardener (Mr Don) but maybe not for the King. On the other hand, they could make a double act of it, like the two Ronnies.

JPB123 Sun 28-Jun-26 21:45:57

Love Monty Don’s voice…..don’t mind what he wears? 🤣

CanadianGran Sun 28-Jun-26 21:00:29

I have no opinion on what the King should wear, but I must say this thread gets more entertaining the longer it gets!

Also, I must admit the Mr. Don's attire has always puzzled me. A comb would also do him well.

For Older, and Magenta, re "freedom of speech".

1 -- the original comment (Dulostwolly?) said :- "send them all to France. they will know what to do with the lot" . . . .and from my admittedly distant and dusty recollection of the French Revolution, that seems to be recommending execution.

2 -- So, YOU are also advocating extreme violence, which in that context, might be against some ancient treason law we still retain?

3 -- AS you want the OP to be able to make their comment on here -- even if it is suggesting a number of violent deaths -- just WHY does that give YOU the right to say that the 'freedom of speech' is just fine, but that of the people who contradicted the OP is in some way out of order? Are you on that well known website 'Hypocrites United'?

I wanted to say something there Greyduster but it may have got me banned so I’ll just say it made me chuckle a lot 🤣

GrammaH Sun 28-Jun-26 20:40:32

Well I certainly don't know anyone who takes their style tips from Monty Don. He wore what looked like the same suit throughout Chelsea, it started off crumpled and ended up extremely crumpled - maybe he never took it off? Certainly had the rumpled look of a pair of week-worn pyjamas. As for that silly scarf he wore with it in some days...just ridiculous. He may be a gardener - so is DH but I wouldn't want him at Chelsea in his old gardening trousers, scruffy wellies and ancient wax jacket! The King may be very warm in whatever he's dressed in but he does look smart & cool in the "not hot" meaning of the word. Oh, and DH rarely wears short sleeves but he's definitely not posh!!

Greyduster Sun 28-Jun-26 20:02:28

Dear God! Shoot me now😩!!

Casdon Sun 28-Jun-26 19:18:23

You have that in common with both the King and Monty grumppa.

grumppa Sun 28-Jun-26 19:15:07

No short-sleeved shirts for me; I just roll up the long ones.

sadgranma - Yes, I thought something similar in Hawaiian mode. But why not go the whole hog? A grass skirt would probably be cooler than linen trousers, and he wouldn't have to worry about the creases.

Nanny27 Sun 28-Jun-26 17:16:46

I retain the right to live here. I definitely like the royals but to my knowledge have never been known to bow and scrape.

merlotgran Sun 28-Jun-26 16:51:20

Greyduster

When he is an official at a formal event, for example, the Chelsea flower show, he still manages to loom as if he’s just got out of bed in whatever he is wearing! It really gets up my nose! Can’t the man make an effort? Anyway. End of rant.

The award for sartorially elegant, not a hair out of place, wouldn’t be seen dead in crumpled linen gardener, is sitting on Alan Titchmarsh’s mantelpiece.
I think they should change images for a bit of entertainment. 😂

Calendargirl Sun 28-Jun-26 16:34:54

I’m sure Charles’s valet makes sure that his boss is ‘comfortable’ in whatever he’s wearing. I bet Charles soon says if things don’t suit.

Why are short sleeved shirts ‘common’.? I think on a hot day, a SS shirt looks much smarter than a long sleeved one.

I commented to DH on Friday, the hottest day of the year, why were the BBC News reporters telling us about these unprecedented temperatures and yet still wearing LS shirts, (and no hat)?

Magenta8 Sun 28-Jun-26 16:23:23

Cossy

Yes I agree but more so the poor people in all of our armed forces.

I can't imagine what it must be like to wear a bearskin and full rig-out. No wonder they often pass out.

Grandmotherto8 Sun 28-Jun-26 16:08:40

William is also much lazier than his father. He will be a terrible king.

ComeOnGran Sun 28-Jun-26 15:57:20

My daughter went out with a posh boy for a while and he told my husband that short sleeves are ‘common’ 🤭 I guess there’s a posh dress code 🤷‍♀️

crazyH Sun 28-Jun-26 15:49:01

sadgranma I thought the same thing too.
A short-sleeved cotton shirt (or perhaps a Hawaiian shirt😂) and linen trousers . He would have been cool and handsome !

MickyD Sun 28-Jun-26 15:48:16

Who says anti royals don’t like living here??? What a strange and rude comment 🤷

gransruleok Sun 28-Jun-26 15:37:45

It’s very obvious a lot of gransnetters are getting overheated and are not getting much sleep, but we are all in the same boat so let’s try to be civil at least. And, by the way, Monty Don is a gardener.

I don’t understand Greyduster he’s a gardener, not an official at a formal event?
