I always give our binmen a wave and shout ‘Thankyou!’
One replied, ‘I’ve been in this job three weeks and you’re the first to say Thankyou’.
It’s a horrid job, couldn’t we all give them a smile and a wave?

It’s a “horrid” quite well paid job….😁

Cossy

The reason that organisations are “picky” and “jobs worthy” it’s probably due to knowing that for that stuff that is actually recycled rather than put in a hole or burnt, if things are incorrect bins etc the entire bin of recycling could be rejected.

Yes but doing what you suggest would involve lifting bags out of the bin and using an implement to slash the bag(s) open, then rummaging through them, allowing the contents to spill onto the pavements; (most of our neighbour’s general waste bins are always full now it’s on a 3 weekly collection cycle).

In general, bin crews (refuse collectors) do not have to open black rubbish bags inside standard general waste wheelie bins, as long as the bags contain everyday household waste.
However, they are permitted to open, inspect, or even reject your bags in certain scenarios e.g Recycling Bins.

Recycling is not supposed to be in bin bags.
If black bags are placed in your recycling bin, crews will often open them to check for contamination or refuse to empty the bin entirely until the plastic bag is removed.

Many councils require clear sacks rather than black sacks for recycling so they can easily verify what is inside.

Side Waste & Overfilling: If you leave loose extra black bags beside your bin, crews often will not take them (unless it is a specifically authorised excess-waste collection day).
Occasionally, collectors will rip open these side-waste bags to check for recyclables before taking them or leaving them behind.

I have green (garden waste) bags and blue (recycling) bags and a box for glass. We have no food waste collections yet and not expected until August 2027. Fortnightly collections until then.

I never put my bins out !! My wonderful neighbours share my bins and use theirs as water butt's or to store wood. They do have their own garden waste bin and as they do my garden I don't need one.
This has been going on for six years and we've yet to face any problems.

Must be a new thing MG. I’ve never known bin men go through our bins. I will check on the ring doorbell next time & report back 😂

My mother-in-law never had to put her bins out once she used a walking stick as she registered with her local council saying that it was difficult to do. The refuse team come to the side of the house, collect them and then them return them to their place.

I expect most councils can do this.

During the last very hot spell I took some cans of drink from my fridge for the bin collectors. The lovely young lady who is one of them thanked me profusely and said nobody had ever done that before. Yes, I expect they have water in the vehicle, but I thought a chilled drink each would be welcome, and it was!
