A light hearted and frivolous look at Royal Ascot

I thought all the Royals looked lovely yesterday, with Zara Tindall and the new Mrs. Phillips taking top spots for me.

It was nice to see one of the team from the Queen's Reading Room in the carriage procession. In the same carriage was Ben Elliott - Camilla's nephew, once co-Chair of the Conservative Party, founder of the Quintisentially group - a very posh concierge service. Interestingly, he is married to Steve Winood's daughter, Clare. A merger of two very different cultures.

There were some very elegant outfits yeterday, along with the normal bizarre and downright awful.

Wasn't keen on Mary Berry's outfit.

I’ll be in yellow - oilskins and a sou-wester, as it’s going to rain all day. grin

Maybe we should all dress up tomorrow Ladies Day? For me that will mean changing out of my pyjamas….

I liked Williams yellow flowers in his lapel compliment Kate’s dress.

Not been to Ascot for many years, but Cheltenham and Sandown regularly until a few years ago.
A black Fedora was my choice of hat in March for Gold Cup week.
I like what the Queen wears and the rest of the royals.

Queen Camilla was wearing the Williamson pink diamond brooch, which is a stunner.

It isn’t the same without the late Queen, I agree, but short of abandoning the carriage procession, what else can Charles do?

There would be uproar if that happened.

I spent the first 20 years of my life living in the village next to Ascot Racecourse, the one that the procession goes through from Windsor Great Park.
It was a massive event for the village, with the primary school being closed for the week. We were lucky to be there every day for years as children, and I returned as often as I could to visit my parents after I left home.
The Lady Di and Fergie years were magical, to see them up close having so much fun.
Wonderful also to see the Queen on her way to her favourite event of the year.

Since the Queen died I have lost all interest in the Royal Family and haven’t seen a single picture of Ascot this year.

I think it’s Lady Gabriella Kingston now, ferry.

It is of course. My mistake.

No sign of the York Princesses so far. Maybe they're meeting up with their Mother in her Austrian hideaway after attending a society wedding in Vienna last week. It's a tough life. smile

Lady Gabriella Windsor looked elegant and poised as usual. I liked the yellow on the Princess of Wales - following in our late HM's footsteps and wearing bright colours.

Unusual choice from the Duchess of Edinburgh. Black dress with black and white hat and white Jimmy Choos with a black trim.

Kate’s bright yellow outfit today is certainly stunning and I love the hat.

I always think yellow attracts storm bugs ( memories of being covered in them at a school sports day one year).

Must thank Peter Mandelson for inspiring me to have my 3 pence ew on Rogue Diplomat …

What would you wear Esmay? The two times I have been I wore a longish red and white flowery cotton dress with a red jacket. Both times I think. Maybe 20 years ago. Had a winner. Lovely day with a good friend. No hat as I dont do hats.
Very sunny. Great day out. As MayBee says all sorts of people having a good day.

Esmay Wed 17-Jun-26 16:38:42

As usual ,I'm drooling over the horses.
I didn't really look at the Royal outfits.
I know what I'd wear !

Ah yes. Our 'betters' showing off to the oiks.......

Can I just say that there is no sport as classless as racing. Unless you’ve actually been you wouldn’t realise how on most tracks everyone mixes with everyone else and you can chat to pretty much anyone: owners trainers etc. Ok places like Ascot and York have more expensive enclosures because it’s as much of a social event as a sporting one, but everyone still mixes round the paddock and pre parade ring. Don’t we all like to dress up sometimes?

That's a shame Padstow that you feel so inferior.

HelterSkelter1 Wed 17-Jun-26 14:09:45

The oiks have a fun day out as well. Lots of people.... oiks and "betters" hahahaha end up pizzicato at the end of the day and roll home. Who cares!

Stevie Winwood is very right wing politically I believe ( albeit not as right wing as Brian Ferry). It rather surprised me. I’m glad they’ve got good weather. Ladies day at the races is one of the few occasions when most of us can wear outfits that we’ve bought first weddings and have nowhere else to wear them.

HelterSkelter1 Wed 17-Jun-26 12:53:09

Loved the Duchess of Gloucesters nipped in jacket and pleated full skirt. And Princess Anne's jacket and hat...couldn't see the bottom half. Both yesterday.
Haven't seen today's Royal outfits yet.

Fun day out for all of them. I always like whatever Camilla wears. She has very much her own style.

Years back we used to watch the changeover in Windsor Park where the Royals get out of their cars and into carriages. That was the in the time of Princess Di and I had littlies in a buggy.
That was fun with a picnic on the grass.

HelterSkelter1 Wed 17-Jun-26 12:45:06

We live a few train stops before Ascot and the trains going through our station are packed with racegoers. Most years a steam train goes through as well with a big hoot hoot and lots of "smoke". Great fun. And glorious weather for this week.

Some wonderful clothes and some pretty awful. But that's the same everywhere.
Now I only saw Mary B in a photo and thought she looked lovely. I do like a navy polka dot. I shall watch the tv this afternoon and of course tomorrow Ladies Day. The racing commentators are really good....can't stsnd the fashion ones though.

ferry23 Wed 17-Jun-26 11:38:11

I don't think any of these events are the same without the late Queen merlotgran.

merlotgran Wed 17-Jun-26 11:34:05

I always enjoy the carriage procession and thought yesterday’s outfits were lovely, especially Harriet Phillips’s.

It’s not the same without the late Queen though. The procession has shrunk so much it has lost all its intrigue. It was fun wondering who was ‘in’ and who had fallen from grace. 🤣
Sadly, age and infirmity has caught up with a lot of them and I doubt Fergie will be on the guest list!

We used to live in Bracknell, the next railway station after Ascot.

As a commuter we loved and loathed Ascot week. Loved it because all the race goers were usually cheerful and ready for a jolly. Loathed it because the train was full and I had to stand for the whole journey.
