... there is a lovely item about a rooftop garden in a London hospital that leads off the ICU where patients can be wheeled out with all their medical equipment to see the sky and smell the flowers ... what a splendid idea!

Yes. It's a new lift I think.
Great idea.
It's King's.

Just found this:

Gardens, fresh air, the sky and warm sunshine - wonderful, especially when seriously ill and having been inside for so long.

I saw this too. The first person to be taken out there from the unit was overwhelmed by the beauty of it all and and the experience of being outside.

I saw that! It’s fabulous isn’t it!

kittylester Fri 29-May-26 09:09:08

Wasn't it great?

Anything that allows patient s to get out into the sun is good. 15mins no sun screen is all it takes to flood the body with Vit D which supports the immune system. Remember all those photos of tb and polio patients outside in the sun convalescing in the 20s and 30s?

I found a lovely area at the hospital where my son is receiving chemo. Never noticed it before as it’s tucked away but on Monday I wandered in and there’s a big pond full of koi carp and goldfish with a fountain and a big metal sculpture.

Plenty of seats around and some shade from young trees. There were loads of patients in wheelchairs sitting around who family members had brought from wards. There was also a chained prisoner with two officers either side and he kept his face turned up to the sun. We all need fresh air and sunshine.

Such a good idea!

It will make a huge difference to the patients

Wonderful. I think we all realise the positive impact of being in a garden.

Just seeing GREEN is said to be very beneficial.

Wonderful, amazing! 😊

Lovely. Our local big big hospital has a "Secret Garden" opened in 2023 with similar facilities, and there is a second one for patients with spinal injuries.

(It's one of the reasons I watch "Look North" after the main BBC News. It's different regionally of course They always have good news stories like this and also stories of bravery or community positive actions ☺️, and we need more news like that).

Best wishes Primrose 53. I am glad you have found a peaceful outdoors spot.
I hope the treatment goes well. Hard on you and him. I am glad the weather is cooler for you both and the other patients undergoing chemo.

What a brilliant idea, a big well done to all involved.

Very supportive words HS. I echo them.

Sounds lovely. Our hospital entrance is full of folk sat in wheelchairs smoking 😩

I'm another who saw this on the news yesterday evening.
What a wonderful place. The added bonus being, the patients have all the equipment to hand. It's a fully equipped outdoor ICU.
All paid for by donations too.
As someone up thread mentioned, the TB sanatoriums all had outdoor areas for patients. My late husband spent many years as a child and young adult in a sanitortium when he had TB. He remembers waking up with snow on his bed.

Oh dear .....

Jojo1950 Sun 31-May-26 13:40:42

Awful isn’t it. Especially for those with lung issues walking through the smoke filled air.

Years ago patients were sent for respite at the seaside.

Luckygirl3 Sun 31-May-26 13:47:12

They have to go outside under a canopy here.

I saw on TV the lady being wheeled outside in her hospital bed. Have to admit my first thought was what if wasps or other insects land on her and she's unable to waft them away. Probably just me as have so many wasps etc around here.

BlueBelle Sun 31-May-26 13:51:20

Ours aren’t allowed near the hospital entrance there’s a smoking shelter near the car park and to be honest I ve rarely seen more than one or two in it But if anyone lights within range of the entrance a tannoy says ‘no smoking near the hospital’ and repeats it until they sheepishly move away.

yogitree Sun 31-May-26 14:04:45

Weirdly, although our local hospital has lovely gardens 'within/outwith' the buildings, I have never seen anyone in them! Perhaps it's because of the Scottish weather. Brrrr
