I am not going to moan about the glorious weather but sleep had been a challenge!

I have shut windows, closed curtains and blinds during the day then opened windows after sunset, yet the upstairs of our wonderfully energy efficient home still feels like a sauna.

We sleep on Egyptian cotton sheets with an empty Egyptian cotton duvet cover and have an Airblade whirring all night and still we are sweltering.

Are there any tricks I am missing?

Praying the Easterly breeze will bring respite tonight.

I have been very lucky to have been on holiday in the Isle of Wight until last night. Was so looking forward to sleeping in my own bed. Went to bed early and switched on the electric points by the bedside table, table lamp, clock, charging points etc, completely forgot the electric blanket was also plugged in!!! Woke up after about half an hour of hitting the pillow and thought the bed was on fire!!! Had to move to the spare room to try to cool down!

Last night at 11 pm it was 24C. I thought I was going to die in the heat. I had a fitful night's sleep.

I live in London and am reluctant to open a window during the day because of the number of chancers around here. My house, although modern and well-insulated, is always cold, and now I do appreciate the coolness.

My goodness, 24C is nothing, it reached over 31 inside the other evening, though we are opposite Kew which was supposed to be the hottest place in the country that day

Blimey paws my bedroom is never down to 14c even in winter, are you melting ice blocks in there!

It was 5 am and the Dyson fan was on med high all night.

We never get that low either - even now with my portable aircon keeping it down during the day and the windows open once it is cooler in the evening. Last night wasn't too bad here, or perhaps I'm getting used to it?!

I've slept better over the last few nights than I have for a while. Half and half Ovaltine/Horlicks and hour before goung up to bed, half an hour of reading then lights out. Windows fractionally open, no fan ever. Sleeping on top of duvet to go to sleep but wake up under duvet the following morning. Totally unaware of doing so.

The BBC website recommended putting socks in the fridge before bed. Not sure if it would work because surely you would eventually wake up with hot, sweaty feet!

Sandrax Thu 28-May-26 14:07:17

I keep a small atomiser spray bottle filled with water by the bed. If I wake up too hot a quick spray cools me down instantly as it evaporates.
I cary one in my handbag when I go out too.
It is cheap and effective.

Make a spritz with a few drops of tea tree oil and lavender, top up spray bottle with water and put in fridge until needed.
A light spray on your face is lovely. Not just for bedtime, anytime.

here it was so cold last night that I got out of bed and fetched my quilt.

As soon as it gets dark the temperature drops drastically.

We had a breeze for the first time last night, plus rain & thunder during the night, even though it didn’t give out for rain.
I never used my fan last night.
Only annoying thing was that there was fire works going off every ten minutes up to midnight.

faringdon59 Thu 28-May-26 11:48:03

Well, I've had about 3 nights of not sleeping well, due to heat and last nights thunderstorm.
Really finding the effects today, woke up a dreadful headache and feeling drained.
Hopefully get a better night tonight.....

JenniferEccles Thu 28-May-26 08:06:58

Thanks Ziplock I will look into that make.

I had a cold zero Guinness and hour or so before bed and I think that helped me sleep. But last night was cooler. Lovely cool breeze at the moment. All doors and windows open.

We also have a Meaco table top fan and it is efficient and quiet and have .a large floor gym type fan by Schallen. Very efficient but is v noisy. Both upstairs to keep the air moving and not gathering in a hot block at the top of the stairs.

My DD says this is a practise run for the summer. So everyones tips are useful. She is in Bangor N Wales and sent me a video of their thunderstorm and heavy rain last night. Made me feel cool just to watch it,

Damp towel on the bed is a good idea as well as a damp flannel close by. I used to travel on the hot Tube with a wet J cloth round my neck....a clean one every day. That helped a lot and was easy to keep in a plastic bag in my bag. Cheap and then I used them in the kitchen so not a waste. Could do that in bed now.

Slept so well.

The bedroom felt like fridge when we came up.

Hotter today though😬

Thanks for answering MissAdventure
I think I might give your make of fan a miss then!
I am someone who can hear the proverbial pin drop!

Its a duronic, so don't buy one of those.
I must say though, it is fantastically robust, and people are jealous of how well it cools the place - better than my friends dyson fan.

Ziplok Wed 27-May-26 22:50:39

JenniferEccles, the fan we have is very quiet. The brand is Meaco. They are a bit expensive, but work really well. (Not as expensive as Dyson fans and I don’t know how quiet they are).

TerriBull Wed 27-May-26 22:43:34

I've moved into a spare bedroom and taken the fan with me, too noisy for o/h, inspite of him telling me his hearing is not as it was, he can hear the whirring, which isn't that loud. Can't be helped I need it on most of the night.

My fan sounds like a tractor revving up.
Takes a bit of getting used to, but I'm pretty deaf, luckily (?)

JenniferEccles Wed 27-May-26 22:32:17

For those of you who have fans on in the bedroom, I guess they are silent, or do they have a slight hum or whir ?

I too have a cool shower just before bed which does help.

The big window is open with a bit of a breeze coming in, so I’m hoping it will be a little cooler tonight to aid sleep.

There’s a lot to be said for winter!

LauraNorderr Wed 27-May-26 22:31:46

A cold damp bath towel on top of the bottom sheet, works a treat. The towel is bone dry when you wake from a cool nights sleep

No idea how.. But all this week I have slept like a log, it's hot we have x2 fans on in the bedroom all the windows open but I have been zonked out for a good 8 hours.
Complete mystery!

Thanks for the tips.
I have the bedroom windows open, curtains closed all day, ceiling fan at night.
Going up for a shower now , and will let myself drip-dry.

Have a tepid (not cold) shower at bedtime, then after wiping off the worst of the drips, let yourself air dry. It cools the body amazingly. Have a damp face cloth or small towel by the bed to put on your face/body if you wake up in the night.

Hope everyone manages to sleep! 💤

That's a good idea about the face cloth / towel. It reminded me of the time I had to sleep in my truck during the day in the summer. It had a fridge / freezer. I kept a face towel in the freezer section. It worked rather well.
