Whether they are banned or simply stop contributing it seems this happens reasonably often. It is a shame ,particularly when someone who has been a ‘regular’ is banned and most of us have no idea what caused it. A recent person to be banned never, as far as I am aware, transgressed . Sometimes I think someone with opposing views complains and causes a banning quite unnecessarily and we are the poorer for it. It would be very boring indeed if we all held the same views on everything.

I've now found out who it is and to say I'm shocked is an understatement! I know this poster is a kind, informed person who has only ever added value to threads, and has a lovely sense of humour. I've never seen an offensive post from her. I really can't believe she has received multiple warnings as we are being told is the norm before a banning. I implore GN to reconsider.

Cabbie21 Tue 26-May-26 18:09:53

I have never reported an individual, just the obvious spam posts. I either scroll by if I don’t agree with someone’s point of view, or simply state my own point. There is no need to be offensive.

I think there are some who are clearly very 'trigger happy' when it comes to reporting posts. I've disagreed with many posters over the years, but I've always respected their point of view and wouldn't report someone unless they resorted to really offensive personal abuse. I've only ever reported a handful of posts - and they were the very obvious spambot types.

I wouldn’t dream of reporting anybody, I would much sooner take them on myself….😁

I have seen it suggested over the years that some who report posts do so despite not having contributed to the thread, but who just spend their time scanning threads eagerly looking for one to take ‘offence’ at.

In any case I agree with those who say it’s cowardly to report anonymously.

My view though is that posts which may have crossed the line should be left, unless of course they are particularly offensive.

I completely agree smile

I guess the issue is we all have a different level of tolerance and what some might find personally offensive others may not!

Cossy Tue 26-May-26 17:43:02

I’ve just discovered who some others think it is (some of us do pm others on here sometimes)

If it is that person, I’m really shocked, nothing she ever said was personally offensive or deliberately unpleasant.

I know there are rules, but I’ve never ever reported anyone for anything, other than reporting spam.

I will continue to take that stance and if I offend anyone (deliberately or by accident) I’m old enough to own it and apologise.

Sadly, some people don’t give you the chance to reflect and then apologise, because they’re too busy hitting that report button!

That’s why it’s important to exchange email addresses with posters you are close to.

Ladyleftfieldlover Tue 26-May-26 17:32:27

I don’t know who the banned poster is either.

Spinnaker Tue 26-May-26 17:23:30

Thank you Shinamae - please pass on my (and I'm sure lots of others) best regards to her.

I wish I knew how some of you found out,

I have been an online friend of the banned poster for many years. She contacted me by email.

Oh dear. What have I missed?! Who have I missed? I know. You're not allowed to say but it's very frustrating

Join the club! Not a clue what's been going on and no idea who's missing...

I certainly miss GSM. She was forthright, no nonsense and told it as it was. I never ever knew her to be unkind to anyone - she certainly helped/guided posters when they needed her.

The banned poster was also much respected and quite witty with it. Again, I never knew her to be unkind to others.

It's a shame that the minority of complaining posters can't grow up and just get on with others instead of attacking, patronising, demoralising and generally raising one's hackles as soon as you see their name.

For those of you missing GSM, I am in regular contact with her and I’m sure she browses these threads as well
She has no idea really why she was banned. She has tried several times to get back and has mainly been ignored. I did write to the moderators on her behalf and was told they would not discuss other posters with me.
I think it’s awful, as so many of you do miss her and her very welcome input into many threads. I wish the moderators would look at this thread and maybe reconsider!!

Millie22 Tue 26-May-26 17:09:42

Well I just hope it isn't one of the few people I really like on here.

And keep on posting Primrose from me too.

SpinDriftCoastal Tue 26-May-26 17:01:02

What I like about Gnet is that it stops me from feeling that I am the only person on the planet who has such and such or thinks such and such especially when it comes to being a carer or having ailments. There is support here. Not everyone is interested in politics etc. and I don't like people who patronise others. It is very rude. I don't really care about Queen Bees either. They bore me. So ever onward and ever upward as my old headmistress used to say. It's hot today!

On finding out who is the latest to be banned I am shocked and bewildered.
I don’t know what happened so can’t comment on the particular posts but always found the poster a reliable member of GN.

U so agree and one of the least aggressive of our posters.

Also shocked, I know who it is and I perceive her as really nice poster, with a wry sense of humour. I'm hoping she comes back, I shall certainly miss her.

Regarding your last paragraph I am often on the receiving end of such treatment merely because my views on some subjects are not the same as theirs. GSM 100% shared my views and was not afraid to say so. My name is like a red flag to some people on here 🤣🤣 but I couldn’t care less.

I know I’m far from perfect but if I am wrong about something I will always apologise whilst others cannot bring themselves to do that.

Ah, but it appears there is a coterie or unnoficial 'hierarchy' that wish to - and do - exercise a control on GN that is only a One-Way-Street.

It chops and changes on here.
I once asked how someone was, and was taken to task abouf how innapropriate i was for having asked.
Taken to task by members, not site admin.

How ridiculous!

So do I, though we clashed several times on the N&P page (no surprise there haha)

I'm always surprised if anything I post gets a response - I'm usually ignored. Occasionally I do say something I know is controversial and I get the bite back that I anticipate. But that's what happens in a discussion "in real life".

Perhaps GNHQ could take a look at other posts by the person being compained about to see their character before banning them. Or maybe they could require more than one complaint about a post (apart from obvious spam) before they take action and lose us some of our most helpful members.

But they do do all those things

Look at the GNHQ statement upthread (its in green to find easily
