I was born in South Africa and spent the first 29 years of my life in Worcester in the Cape. Temperatures regularly over 36°C, or also 46°C! Playing in the heat, cycling, tennis, athletics was not a problem for us.
But then I lived in North Germany for 10 years. Afterwards another 10 years in South Africa, followed by a final move to the north of Germany in 2002. Since then, I have adapted so well to the cool temperatures, I can no longer tolerate the heat. 23 to 25°C is enough for me to break into a dripping sweat, requiring me to wear a sweat band. Hence, tomorrow, I will be out in the allotment garden early in my bermuda shorts and flip flops until about 11am, and thereafter can do the chores indoors, and relax in the cool flat until evening. Importantly, the sensitive veggie plants like tomato, chilli, green pepper, cucumbers and zucchini will spend the afternoon under the umbrella. They will only be planted out into the garden in 2 weeks' time when they have acclimatised well enough.
