How do you feel about cameras on housing?

I have a doorbell with a camera (not ring) so I'm not completely innocent in all this but my neighbours at the back have a camera on their garage which I'm pretty sure can see into our lounge, so I close the curtains if we are sitting in there in an evening...

but now my next door neighbours have installed cameras at the back which they can obviously listen through as they are talking to one another through them whilst one is in the house and the other is in the back garden. Presumably they can listen to me and my family talking too?

I actually feel a bit violated, as though my privacy isn't being respected and I don't know if I am being unreasonable. Obviously I am quite boring so they wont be watching or listening to me anyway... who knows

I'm growing a tree in front of the garage camera

it should be illegal to film someone without their permission, especially on phones

I agree. It should be an offence to film someone on a phone, especially if it’s being uploaded to YouTube, or tick-tock.
I might be a laugh to some people but, that person who’s making arse of themselves could be suffering from MH.

Sounds like ours. A RING bought from Costco a couple of years ago

We have cctv on our property, my son set it up as my front door is round the side of the house and is hidden by a hedge, our cameras are set up to only point at our driveway and gate , our back door camera only at our back gate. It only records if someone actually steps on to our driveway or tries to climb over the back gate, we did this precisely so as not to infringe on our neighbours properties. I would hate to think someone was recording us, should I find out someone was recording our back garden id happily start walking round in the nuddy, that would put em off.

Sadly, it seems that the UK is the MOST filmed nation on the planet.

You cannot escape being on camera, wherever you go, so best stay indoors?!

Ring cams, CCTV liberally scattered round city centres, and on transport, most shops have it for security, plus you'll be recorded on dash cams, of cars, buses. whatever.

So, best smarten up when you go out!

It’s a shame we need all this, particularly in our private domestic spaces.

My OH fitted 8 CCTV camera around our whole house approximately 7 years ago. Once installed & working, he went back up the ladders to each camera & adjusted the field of vision (I was looking at the live view & giving “up a bit/down a bit” type instructions) so we couldn’t see into any neighbouring houses or gardens. It’s what any good neighbour should do.
Our birdfeeder camera points down the driveway, except for when the very clever squirrels twist the whole thing around!!

Sensor lights can also be a nuisance. We have them in our back yard, and a neighbour has one in front, but they are not interfering with anyone, but a few years ago we lived opposite a house with a sensor light that was like a searchlight and kept going on every few minutes, we were in the front bedroom and even fairly substantial curtains couldn’t stop it lighting up our bedroom, it was like living next to a lighthouse. We mentioned it to our neighbour and he was quite dismissive, said they were making the neighbourhood safer, when I persevered he did admit he thought it was faulty and would try to fix it so it didn’t go on so often. He never did and eventually we moved to a less comfortable bedroom at the back of the house then we put it up for sale.

Sensor lights should point down, not across.
He should have known that.

Does anyone here ever watch ‘Doorbell News’ on YouTube?
from Ring cameras? It’s American. It’s best to have a strong stomach.
Porch Pirates too - these thieves are brazen.
It’s entertaining in small doses and from the safety of
behind the sofa.

Does anyone remember parents leaving the hall light on
when out as a family, I suppose to deter intruders or burglars, not that there was anything worth stealing in our house,
but a robber would not have known that before breaking in.
How ridiculous then that when we were at home, switching
off the hall light was mandatory.
This ruse would fool no one - who sits in darkened rooms
with the hall light ‘blazing away’
In those days of a more static neighbourhood, everyone
looked out for everyone else, no Neighbourhood Watch stickers needed.
Definitely no security lights - apart from them not being necessary, no one’s Dad would have countenanced paying electricity for a light outside! when it took ‘half his wages’
for the lights we children left on inside the house.

Not a camera but a neighbour has hung a clearly visible large mirror which looks into our sitting room and en suite bathroom
. Whether or not this is intentional I don’t know but it feels uncomfortable.. Not sure I can do anything about it though.

I think you should go & have a word. Tell them it feels a little intrusive.

From time to time. There is one, can’t remember now, but the guy set up this parcels on a timer, so that the people taking these parcels are covered in permanent paint, ink, or glitter 🤣

Thanks, this was only a few weeks ago and I still think of him.

Because of incidents like that, plus being able to track any one up to no good at night passing by, I don't see the harm in a camera that just reaches to include the pavement only? Maybe I'm missing something as no one round here does it.

People who use cameras to look at their cars. I have no time for. Very entitled

You can set a “privacy mask” on most cctv cameras. We have cameras at the front and back of our property but have “masks” which cut off anywhere that is not on our property. I would hate to think that our neighbours could watch us.

Perhaps they may have had problems with vandalism to their cars in the past - I fail to see what's entitled about wanting to protect their property?

I have full camera security as my sons ex has accused him of all sorts and we’ve been able to prove he was indoors every-time. The back garden ones are only on focused on our property. The two neighbours across the road asked me to point them so we can see their properties as well so if anything happens we have it recorded.

It definitely isn't a wildlife camera unless he's pretending to be a badger.

Thanks for the link Graphite I suppose I'll have to talk to them. I really don't understand why they need cameras to talk to one another on. We just live in ordinary suburban houses with relatively small gardens (in the grand scale of things) I just didn't know if I was being over sensitive

You’re definitely NOT being over/sensitive ! Good luck flowers

Not entitled, just conscious that the theft of expensive cars is rampant.
