Morecambe and Wise - the lost tape

I loved the Morecambe and Wise shows in the 60s but was really disappointed with the show last night. Probably good reasons why it was " lost " !

I could never find M&W funny. My in-laws thought they were brilliant and they used to roll around in their armchairs in helpless laughter. At Christmas I used to have to watch programmes like "A hundred years of Morcambe and Wise" or "That Riviera Touch."

I found the big one with the glasses made me squirm and the celebrities who were ritually embarrassed made me want to hide behind the sofa.

I haven't watched the lost tape as I have a feeling I wouldn't enjoy it.

They were funny, but I wouldn't watch them now.

I love Morecambe and Wise! Particularly their guests, who did zany things. Apparently it was a real honour to be a guest on their show.

I remember the classics such as Dame Shirley Bassey and the shoe/boot. Then Angela Rippon suddenly dancing, and the famous 'There is nothing like a dame' with loads of famous faces.

I haven't watched the lost tape though. I'll try and watch it.

I've watched a couple recently and thought that I never found them even vaguely amusing and why would I now ?
My relatives loved them and wouldn't go out if they could watch Morecombe and Wise.
I've wondered if it appealed to a certain generation .
I loved Monty Python and my parents used to be irritated if I inflicted it on them .
I recall my mother in law telling we twenty/thirtysomethings that it was obvious that we were forcing ourselves to laugh !

M&W were still churning out their unfunny sketches, while looking very pleased with themselves, when Monty Python, Not the Nine O'clock News, The young Ones and other new wave comedies and sketch shows were airing and becoming very popular..

My in-laws were convinced I was pretending to prefer the younger comedians just to be different.

My parents (that is mainly my mother )and in laws (mainly mother in law)were completely thrown by the programmes that you listed .
They just couldn't understand the humour of the "younger generation " and thought it disrespectful ,disgusting and even alarming .
My mother in law actually got quite irritable if they were on the box .
My mother went a stage further and switched the TV off !

Good lord Esmay, I could have written your post myself and yes I thought it was just me, almost a sacrilege to say "I never found Morecombe and Wise funny" given they were so embedded as national treasures. I never thought they were anything other than hackneyed old school comedians. Just never got their appeal. They were there to introduce, when they had say The Beatles on, I wasn't interested in their banter. Yes much more of a Monty Python fan so were my parents. My parents before Monty Python were fans of David Frost type programmes such as "That was the Week that was".

Apart from the breakfast scene they never did anything funny. The Two Ronnies were much funnier bur never got the same recognition.

I loved this old recording and laughed a lot more than with more modern comedies. Love ‘Last of the Summer Wine’ repeats too (not the very early episodes though. Surprised not many did.

I loved Morecambe and Wise, The Two Ronnies, and David Frost’s satire. I haven’t watched the lost tapes, though.

I suspect it is a generational thing. I’m in my mid-80s. My sons, in their early 50s, don’t find them funny at all.

I love Morecambe and Wise. I also love Monty Python and the alternative comedians. A laugh is a laugh and I like anyone who makes me laugh.

I love Morecambe and Wise. My Dad used to laugh till the tears ran down his face. He liked Monty Python too, but Mum said it was a bad influence because it was "nonsense". Years before, she wouldn't let me read the Winnie the Pooh books I had as a present for the same reason

Grew up loving many tv highlights. Most are cringeworthy now.

I used to love M&W back in the day but I don’t think I will watch the lost tapes. I have watched repeats of several other old comedy shows and sitcoms that I used to find really funny only to find them really dated and rather cringeworthy now. The only one that I think stands the test of time is Dad’s Army.

Ah Dad's Army! Brilliant then and brilliant now.

Dad's Army was/is brilliant. The cast was so good at being serious which made it hilarious. "Don't tell them your name, Pike".

They were of their time, and maybe would not seem funny now.
But I'm older than many on here and they were really popular in their day. I enjoyed their programmes. I did watch the lost tapes and liked them, but did feel that humour has moved on though.
