How to age with dignity

I did the pink streaks a couple of years ago. Most people seemed to like it.
I'm not sure that I'm very dignified really. But I'm trying to not become a 'little old lady' just yet.

Aging with dignity. The phrase brings back images of elderly grandmothers in widows weeds, a stick and lorgnette and a cowed and dispirited daughter who it was decided should look after mother when she got old.

Well, I am not widow, do not need a stick and prepfer glasses to a lorgnette, and the idea that it would be possible to cow or dispirit DD into being my dutiful compnaion in old age has me rolling on the floor with laughter.

I intend to age disgracefully.

However, despite having a different idea of old age to that of the OP, she is, nevertheless, very welcome as a new member of GN, where she will find that disagreeing with someone has never been allowed to spoil a beautiful friendship.

My aim would be at all costs to avoid dementia*, so I won’t need ‘toileting’ as they like to call it, or to have my nappies changed.

*there’s no sure way, I know, but it’s in the news lately from some American study, that people who eat eggs regularly are less likely to develop it - because of some substance in eggs.

So no prizes for guessing what I had for breakfast, or rather brunch, just now…

I read that too, my OH has Alzheimers.

Incontinence is not necessarily the result of dementia. It can be purely physical.

My children and friends tell me my brain is still sharp {I’m 86), but I can’t memorise things as well as I used to be able to, and I certainly can’t dance as well!

The trouble with dementia related incontinence (usually) is that the person is a) either no longer aware of it, and/or b) doesn’t care even if they do.

Which I suppose can be a ‘blessing’. My mother’s incontinence in later stage dementia would have been a daily torment and hideous embarrassment to the fastidious and very private person she was before.

We are still young underneath. If we still have our health it’s a bonus, mine is not so good, but I’m hoping to recover after I’ve had my stress cardiac scan. You sound enterprising and not ready to throw in the towel yet.

A pacemaker usually gives the recipient a new lease of life. I hope it will prove to be so for you.
I'm quietly enjoying my later years, now in my 84th year. Recently moved house and county. Even more recently, in the last month, I've created a new garden. I'm sitting outside now looking at the pleasing result and listening to birdsong.
More planting this afternoon.

For the incontinence pelvic floor exercises help a lot. Memory lapses are sometimes due to the numerous pills that we are prescribed as brain fog is often listed in the side effects. We are overwhelmed with dementia warnings and worry unnecessarily when we can’t remember everything, whereas when we were young we would laugh about it. The brain is like a computer and occasionally gets overloaded with information. It needs to be freed up to let the next bit of information in.

I think if we forget about the ‘ageing’ part, and accept the age we are, without stressing about trying to look younger, we will ‘age with dignity’.
If we saw more articles like ‘ Look Fabulous at Eighty’ rather that ‘Look Ten Years Younger’, we’d do better!

I keep telling my children I intend to age disgracefully with pink streaks in my hair if I fancy it! (I did go that a few tests ago. They were appalled
