Voting. I’m so glad we still have the ‘old fashioned’ system…

…of pencil and paper, X in the box.

Nowadays I simply wouldn’t trust electronic voting - hackers seem to be able to get into anything.
We’ve just been to vote. Calm, orderly, nobody hassling you, no police - long may it last.

Whitewavemark2 Thu 07-May-26 12:08:50

Yes it is always like that at our voting station.

Marydoll Thu 07-May-26 12:16:09

We do postal voting. I cannot climb the hill to the polling station and there is no available parking.
Postal voting works well for me. I missed voting one year, due to illness, I don't have to worry now.

Yes I do postal voting , just out of ease, no elections in my area this time around.

None outside our polling station! 🙁.
But it was very quiet generally.

The X in the box is still the same, but we now have online verification of the poll card, and because of the location of our polling station the wifi signal is not good. We were in a queue to vote this morning because the scanner was playing up.

Agree. I even agree with proving your identity - even though the 'officer' always, 'Hi kitty, love your front garden at the moment' or something like that.

We don’t have to take the polling card - it actually says so.
I just took my passport, dh took his photo Freedom Pass.

Did you not have to take photo ID? I had thought it was compulsory now.

The advantage of a postal vote is the ability to tear it up into pieces… recognising the futility of UK politics.

No, you don’t need photo id for Wales elections yet.

We always voted in person, but switched to postal when our passports expired, as I don't have a driving licence. I miss going into the booth, and passing friends and neighbours on the walk to the church hall. There was a community feel to it all, as well as a sense of continuity, knowing how many people had done the same before us.

I don't know if we'll switch back, as we are often away, and it's convenient to do it by post.

Wheniwasyourage Thu 07-May-26 14:37:23

We went quite early this morning and as usual, it was calm, efficient and friendly. You don't need photo ID for Scottish elections, just like Wales.

Doodledog, is it not possible to use your bus pass as ID? Or get some sort of thing from your council? That is should you decide to go back to voting in person - I know how you feel about the community feel to voting at a polling station. It is a privilege to be able to vote in any way, isn't it?

Sarnia Thu 07-May-26 15:51:00

Business as usual in my polling station this morning. Thank goodness we don't need an app, QR code or pin number in order to vote, just simple ID. Long may it last.

Calendargirl Thu 07-May-26 19:48:01

If you have no passport or driving licence, you can get a Voter Authority Card, free, from the council.

Just have to apply a bit before an election, don’t leave it until the last minute.

Never seen or heard about any dogs outside the polling station, and rarely see people I usually go before 8am on my way to work so rarely see anyone soon community feeling for me

Aveline Thu 07-May-26 20:01:56

Only one other person voting at the polling station I voted at. Ominously quiet. We had to queue to get in last time.

Queues late afternoon. Hope they made good choices.

Postal voting for me ever since we retired as we regularly hopped between Manchester and Málaga and as Himself used to rack & stack our flights it was the best option to ensure we voted.

Astitchintime Fri 08-May-26 07:28:46

I have had a postal vote for years mainly because I used to work very unsocial shifts and lived in a remote area so accessing the polling station was stressful and often inconvenient. Even when I moved house I kept the postal vote and now MrA has it too.

When I was a child we lived opposite a place which was regularly used as a polling station and I recall there always being a policeman on duty, just the one, no riot gear, no crowd control……..just a local beat bobby.

Very quiet at my polling station yesterday. Counting hasn't started yet in Wales but Labour is expected to lose after 100 years in power.

.

Postal voting should only be allowed for those who are physically unable to attend in person. Which should be confirmed by a GP.
It is far too open to fraud.

I don’t think we should be using pencils to place our X these can be tampered with. We should use a biro.
